General Summary / Overview Statement

* Directs daily operations of pharmacy services.
* Directs and supports pharmacy staff.
* Participates in determining the short and long-term goals for the department and related policies and procedures.
* Directs the review and assessment of pharmacotherapy and optimizes drug therapy to improve therapeutic outcomes.
* Provides leadership and guidance to the pharmacy staff.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

* Practice pharmacy according to the laws, and regulations of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy, Department of Public Health, Food and Drug Administration, Drug Enforcement Administration and other regulatory agencies.
* Provide leadership, guidance and serve as a role model to those professionals under his/her supervision.
* Supervise and direct the daily operations of pharmacy services.
* Schedule and assign staff.
* Serve as a resource person regarding pharmacy policies to pharmacists, physicians, nurses and other hospital staff.
* Participate in on-call responsibility as assigned.
* Responsible for staff development and performance evaluation.
* Assist in recruitment, interviews, and training of new staff.
* Staff as required.
* Participate in the development of policy and procedures.
* Conduct educational programs, in-services, and staff meetings.
* Perform personnel management related tasks including hiring, discipline, payroll approval, counseling and terminations.
* Maintains expertise through membership and participation in professional organizations, continuing educational programs, publishing articles, or reviewing the current literature.
* Compile departmental metrics and reports as needed.
* Evaluate new products and technology and make appropriate recommendations regarding their use.
* Provide ideas and suppoting information on capital equipment expenditures budgeting and expenditures.
* Provide follow-up on safety reports as requested.
* Assist in inventory management and budget management.
* Perform all other duties as needed for departmental functions.

Qualifications

* Must complete a minimum 20 continuing education credits per year to maintain license(s).
* Upon department orientation and annually thereafter, must complete:
* Safety training
* OSHA/Fire Safety
* Infection Control
* Safe handling of chemotherapeutic agents

* Competency assessments in the area of:
* Age-specific pharmacotherapy
* Process-specific skills
* Clinical skills
* Population-specific pharmacotherapy
* Aseptic technique

* Must have a Pharm.D. OR a B.S. in Pharmacy with at least 10 years' experience from an accredited college of pharmacy and licensed to practice in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
* Post-graduate training is preferred.
* A masters degree in health administration, public health, business administration, or other relevant discipline is desired.
* Must have 2 years of experience.

Skills and Abilities Required

* Must have excellent verbal, written and quantitative skills.
* Displays a comprehensive knowledge of department operations.
* Shows knowledge of the pharmacology of drugs and legal aspects of dispensing.
* Demonstrate interpersonal skills to educate and supervise staff, normally acquired after a three to five years of related hospital experience in a progressive, large health care organization and through self-directed education.
* Can work accurately and make decisions under stress and with time constraints.
* Must pay attention to detail.
* Must be able to appropriately confront issues, make decisions, and solve problems.
* Must be able to function and rotate through many department units or areas, sometimes on the same shift.
* Must display appropriate knowledge of the principles of growth and development of the neonate, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient. In addition, must possess the ability to assess patient specific data concerning age-specific needs and provide care as described in departmental policies and procedures.

Working Conditions

* Works under constant time deadlines.
* Occasionally exposed to infectious disease and to possible carcinogenic, mutagenic, and sensitizing medications.

Supervisory Responsibility

* Directly supervise the activities of all pharmacy and support personnel.
