OverviewMercyOne Newton Medical Center is a fully owned hospital of MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center and a member of MercyOne Network.It is located in the city of Newton, Iowa, county seat of Jasper County. Positioned on Interstate 80, the nation's only east/west transcontinental interstate highway, Newton is about 30 miles east of the Des Moines metropolitan area, which has a population in excess of 400,000.MercyOne Newton has a well-deserved reputation for bucking the trend of diminished health care in rural America by enhancing the quantity and quality of its services during the last two decades. This has been accomplished by expanding, remodeling and providing technological improvements to its physical facilities and by adding new physicians. Attached to the hospital is a 50,000-square-foot medical office building containing local physician practices and the hospital's physical medicine and rehabilitation center.MercyOne Newton is one of the largest employers in Jasper County, along with the local school system and the county government.ResponsibilitiesPOSITION SUMMARY: Staff pharmacist is responsible, under the leadership of the Pharmacy Manager, to dispense medications accurately and safely upon receipt of a medication order. Also provide medication information to patients, respiratory, medical & clinical staff. Is a team member with physicians, nurses, and pharmacy staff to provide personal care to our patients. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:Read and interpret physician's orders and ensure appropriate dispensing and follow-up related to drug therapy to promote the safe and effective use of drugs within the hospital. Related activities include, but are not limited to: appropriate product selection, compounding, labeling and packaging with completion of appropriate records, maintaining an accurate medication profile for each patient receiving medications within the institution; delegating product preparation activities to pharmacy technicians when appropriate within legal limits and Hospital policies and procedures.Evaluate drug orders for appropriateness with regard to patient age, condition, disease state and concomitant therapies to promote optimal patient outcomes.Consult with and provide information and guidance to various medical, nursing, and other health care professionals concerning drugs and their appropriate use, demonstrating excellent communication and customer service skills. Ensure that drugs are available to patients at the time they are needed to avoid delays in therapy and promote positive patient outcomes.Satisfactorily completes required safety training.Respond to emergency situations outside of regularly scheduled work hours to meet patients' drug needs.Assume the duties of the Manager of Pharmacy in his/her absence to manage the daily activities of the department.Assist in orienting new personnel/ students to the department.Ensure that drug items are appropriately billed to various areas or patients to promote financial viability of the hospital.Ensure that pharmacy inventory is maintained at appropriate levels in a cost-conscious manner to promote availability of items in the formulary.Procure non-formulary items after exhausting formulary alternatives to provide optimal drug therapy.Review and assume responsibility for orders and products prepared by pharmacy technicians.Assigns and supervises pharmacy technicians as necessary to meet workload demands.Participate in and/or provide support to hospital committees as agreed upon by committee members and the Director of Pharmacy.Participates in departmental and hospital performance improvement activities to promote quality in the medication use process.Assist the department and hospital in maintaining compliance with accreditation standards.Maintain competency as required by professional standards.QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS:Bachelor of Science degree or Doctor of Pharmacy from an accredited college of pharmacy and Iowa License (or eligible).Previous hospital experience beneficial.Demonstrated ability to communicate well with nurses, physicians, pharmacy staff, & other guests/visitors of MercyOne Newton Medical Center.
