The Winged Rock, Experience it for yourself!

The Community Shiprock, New Mexico
Shiprock New Mexico is an inselberg standing nearly 800 feet over the Navajo Nation's high desert plain in San Juan County, New Mexico. It is known as 'the winged rock' to the Navajo, and is considered sacred for the local population, governed by the Navajo Nation and occupied by the old Pueblo. Shiprock is the most prominent landmark in northwestern New Mexico, in all its significance, size and meaning. This mystifying natural formation has always been a monumental place to the Navajo people, and it was recognized further as a National Natural Landmark in 1975 by National Park Service. Nearby, recreational opportunities abound, including fishing, hiking, biking, cross-country skiing and alpine skiing. Telluride, Durango, Canyonlands, Grand Gulch, the Colorado River, the San Juan River, several large lakes, and the Colorado Wilderness areas are just short drives away and easy access for those venturing the lands of New Mexico.
