JOB SUMMARY:

This position performs all the duties of the pharmacist and fills in for the pharmacists per scheduling needs. Shares responsibility for the direct supervision of the pharmacy technicians with the pharmacists. Ensures the prompt and accurate delivery of medications to the Nursing Units with oversight and input into the entire drug distribution process. Responsible for initiating, planning, development and implementation of clinical pharmacy programs, including but not limited to antimicrobial stewardship program. Oversees the general management and coordination of patient-centered clinical programs, including reviewing present programs and modifying them as necessary when approved by the director. Provides education for clinical professionals (physicians, pharmacists, nurses). Focuses on educating self and clinical staff regarding new medications, dosage requirements, indications, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, potential side effects, precautions and suitable formulary agents for use in specific disease states. Based on documented clinical training, the facilitator functions as a resource person for the Medical, Pharmaceutical and Nursing staff. Develops personal and clinical rounding opportunities. Has a strong developmental emphasis on interactions with physicians, nurses and other health care personnel on a consultative basis and during hospital rounds to ensure safe and effective drug therapy. Functions as the drug expert and provides current and accurate drug information to health care professionals and patients.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • Board certification.
  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree.
  • Participate in ongoing CQI activities for the Pharmacy and Marion General Hospital.


PREFERRED JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • Board certification with proven/documented ability to initiate clinical pharmacy programs and facilitate their development and implementation.
  • A residency with a focus on antibiotic stewardship.


SKILLS / KNOWLEDGE / ABILITIES:
  • A professional level of knowledge of all aspects of pharmaceutical care, including drug distribution, pharmacotherapeutics, parenteral nutrition, drug literature evaluation and general clinical services (pharmacokinetics, geriatrics, and pediatric dosing, etc.).
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively and tactfully communicate with patients and their families and guests, co-workers, managers, providers and other hospital personnel on a one-to-one basis using appropriate grammar, vocabulary and word usage.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary in order to carry out duties in a professional manner, as well as the ability to work well under stress.
  • Basic computer skills and the ability to work in the EMR and proficiently perform computer applications related to department operations and job function.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills in order to complete clinical work, supervise technicians and supervise clinical programs.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Strong organizational skills in order to manage multiple issues simultaneously combined with ability to effectively prioritize.
  • Ability to be discreet and protect the integrity of any confidential matter or information encountered during the performance of job duties.


WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Typical hospital clinical environment with prolonged sitting and occasional standing and walking.
  • Work may be subject to interruptions and occasional high stress levels.
  • Risk for occupational exposure to blood, body fluid and other potentially infectious, electrical and radiation hazards.
  • Clean room activities and handling controlled substances.
  • Works with protected health information.
  • Works in close proximity to patients and visitors.
  • Ability to work any shift, occasional extended hours, holidays and/or weekends based on the needs of the department.


PHYSICAL AND MENTAL ACTIVITIES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:
  • Exacting attention to detail is required to insure the health and safety of patients and staff.
  • Lifting, pushing, pulling, walking, sitting, reaching, bending, kneeling or stooping to perform duties in a safe manner.
  • Uses computers and other standard office equipment.
  • Lifting supplies and equipment typically found in pharmacy area.
  • Manipulation of individual bags/bottles and cases of solutions and other material.
