Paramedic drives ambulance in response to emergency situations such as fires, automobile or other accidents, cardiac arrests, traumatic injuries, etc.  Assesses patient’s condition and performs basic and advanced life support treatments and interventions to stabilize patients for transport in accordance with defined standard and protocols. 

  1. Drives ambulance and other hospital vehicles at a speed necessary to arrive on scene timely and safely in response to emergency situations such as fires, automobile or other accidents, cardiac arrests, assaults, medical emergencies and disasters.
  2. Assesses patient’s condition based upon observation and interviews.  Monitors blood pressure, pulse, respiration and heart rate.  Triages patients in accordance with evaluations.

  3. Performs treatments and interventions to stabilize patients in accordance with protocols or directions from medical care staff including, but not limited to, taking physician orders, administering drugs or IV therapy, cardiac monitor, cardiac defibrillation, intubation, CPR, dressing wounds, applying splints or spinal immobilization devices and administering oxygen, etc.

  4. Provides comfort and support to patients and family members in distress.  Explains treatments and procedures to be performed to elicit cooperation and allay apprehensions.

  5. Provides safe care and transport of patients.  Performs procedures as necessary to maintain or improve medical condition in accordance with established protocols.


Education and/or Experience  

High School diploma or G.E.D. required. Knowledge of first aid and basic advanced life support procedures at a level normally acquired through a post high school Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic education and training in an approved program required.

Work requires knowledge of emergency medical service protocols and skills in administering medications and performing complex emergency medical procedures at a level normally acquired through six to twelve months related experience and training preferred.


Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

State of Illinois licensure as a Paramedic required. CPR certification required. Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain such a license prior to the completion of orientation required. Must be at least 19 years of age and have a safe driving record in order to be insured by carrier.

Intermediate Trauma Life Support, ACLS, PALS, PEPP (Pediatric Education for Prehospital Providers), HAZMAT operations  certification, and NIMS preferred.
