We are currently seeking a Paralegal II to join the Product Liability and Government Investigations organization in the Office of General Counsel. This group manages product liability litigation, commercial litigation, and government investigations in the United States and ex-US litigations that have global implications for the Company. This position will primarily support the global ex-US litigation matters.

Responsibilities: 
  • Collaborate with Merck legal colleagues, outside counsel, supporting vendors, and Merck business colleagues to determine the appropriate scope of factual investigations and then function as a project manager to ensure the necessary facts are obtained in a timely manner. 
  • Communicate proactively and independently with all stakeholders when issues arise during this process, such as new information that may impact the proper scope of the investigation or concerns about the resources required to meet deadlines. This includes factual investigation for internal purposes as well as investigations related to eDiscovery in pending litigations. 
  • Work collaboratively with Merck attorneys on a variety of administrative issues associated with litigation matters, including issuing and managing legal holds, obtaining and managing budgets, reviewing law firm and vendor invoices, managing any insurance or indemnification issues, and providing reporting on litigation matters. 

NOTE: Because this role provides support for litigation matters outside of the US, the ability to work a flexible schedule to accommodate different time zones is required.

 

The successful candidate will be expected to: 

  • Build collaborative relationships with Merck colleagues all over the world, creating and maintaining positive relationships with stakeholders
  • Communicate clearly in both oral and written communications
  • Be comfortable fielding questions about which you may have no or very little previous knowledge and exercise good judgment in triaging those questions and the investigation needed to respond to them in a timely and appropriate manner
  • Screen requests for legal advice/support and exercise independent judgment to identify and obtain the details needed to assess and respond to the requests
  • Determine advice on routine matters independently and respond to questions and inquiries involving moderately complex legal issues under attorney direction as appropriate
  • Develop and/or support the development of initiatives to streamline processes and create efficiencies
  • Complete intricate data and fact analyses and interpret results to fulfill business and legal needs 
  • Deliver concise communications to internal business partners with attorney support as appropriate
Qualifications

Education Minimum Requirement: 
  • Minimum of a High School diploma/GED is required 
  • Associate’s degree, Bachelor’s degree, or Paralegal certificate preferred.

Required Experience and Skills: 

  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience in a corporate law department or the litigation group of a law firm

Preferred Experience and Skills: 

  • Discretion in handling sensitive and confidential information with a high level of integrity 
  • Ability to effectively cope with change; shift gears comfortably; make reasonable decisions without having the total picture; can comfortably handle uncertainty 
  • Substantive knowledge of basic legal principles and processes and related technologies 
  • Ability to independently handle routine legal issues/documents with employees and third parties under attorney direction as appropriate 
  • Ability to independently identify and solve problems that arise 
  • Accuracy & attention to detail in analyses and communications 
  • Ability to speak and write clearly and succinctly to craft effective communications that explain key points and ideas 
  • Effective time management to meet deadlines including project management skills, exercise good judgment to prioritize work, consistent delivery of commitments, and ability to organize information and build upon ideas of others 
  • Autonomy on routine tasks as well as projects of greater complexity and the ability exercise good judgment in identifying when to seek further attorney direction 
  • Clear motivation and focus on achieving measurable, tangible results 
  • Advanced Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel)
