The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.


Purpose of Position

The role of the Mechanical Engineer is to develop producible opto-mechanical designs and documentation to meet the overall system design performance and requirements flow down. The Mechanical Engineer develops the mechanical concept, defines the parts and materials, develops and/or directs the solid design model, and supervises/approves the production drawings and documentation. The Mechanical Engineer will also perform or supervise the tolerance, structural, thermal and mechanism analyses. The Mechanical Engineer will also support the development of prototypes, verification testing, and DTUPC.


Major Responsibilities

  • Design optical systems for A&D environments with support from optical designers
  • Support build of prototypes
  • Up to 10%  travel required



  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • MS in Mechanical Engineering desired
  • Minimum 8 years’ performing opto-mechanical design and development of optical systems layout, optical systems and geometric tolerancing
  • Competency in finite element analysis (Nastran preferred)
  • Experience working with optical design software, optical system test setup and fixture design is desired
