Summary

Performs basic patient care, ophthalmic testing procedures and administrative task as directed by the Ophthalmologist. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.

REQUIRED:

High school diploma or GED

 

At least two (2) year of experience as an Ophthalmic Assistant or Technician.

Certification as Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) through JCAHPO (Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology)

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Ability to communicate written and oral  with physicians, other clinical Associates, and patients and their families both verbally and in writing.
  • Interpersonal skills with ability to successfully interact with physicians, other Associates and patients and their families.
  • Demonstrated skills in conflict resolution and problem solving.
  • Knowledge of medical office practices and medical terminology.
  • High attention to detail demonstrated in clinical and contractual settings.
  • Ability to plan and schedule tasks and projects and to maintain control of own work flow by prioritizing projects.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Performs patient screening examinations.
  • Interview patients and documents ocular and medical histories.
  • Performs routine tests using ophthalmic instruments that provide diagnostic information.
  • Provides Orthoptic treatment.
  • Maintains and cleans ophthalmic instruments.
  • Administers or prepares medications.
  • Assists with in-office procedures.
  • Performs other job functions as assigned.

Physical Requirements

  • The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
  • Must have good balance and coordination.
  • The physical requirements of this position are: light work - up to10 lbs. of force occasionally.
  • The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
  • Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
  • Frequent exposure to patient body fluids.
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
