Oncology Clinical Specialist, Hem/Onc Ambulatory Pharmacy, Primarily Gastrointestinal (GI) Cancer Clinic, Winston Campus

JOB DESCRIPTION:

This position will support the Hematology/Oncology Service Line and all hematology/oncology clinical services at Wake Forest Baptist Health. This position’s primary service will be for outpatient solid tumors. There is potential for additional responsibilities across the health system as assigned. Essential functions required of the position are as follows:

Engagement
  • Foster open & collaborative environment in which team members may discuss opportunities for service expansion, performance improvement, professional development, and other activities as well as topics essential to providing excellent pharmacy services.

Education/Quality
  • Precepting of pharmacy student and resident practice experience schedules, pharmacy service coverage schedules, professional leave requests and emergency coverage.
  • Participates in the delivery of quality patient care through the active review, assessment and approval of medication orders for patients within their assigned practice area.
  • Actively participates in department and organizational committees and involved in quality improvement and patient safety activities for service area, department and medical center.

Utilization
  • Works with members of pharmacy leadership team and other Team Leaders to track and manage pharmaceutical utilization, costs and prescribing trends to identify opportunities for improvement and outcome measures of related initiatives.

Productivity
  • Prevent, detect, and resolve medication-related problems, and make appropriate evidence-based, patient-centered medication therapy recommendations as part of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Appropriately documents activities, including drug therapy recommendations, interventions, educational activities, cost-savings and cost-avoidance efforts, and performance improvement initiatives in which the employee is involved.

In addition to the core responsibilities of the clinical specialist a staffing component will be required in addition to clinical services.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Pharmacy with a B.S. in Pharmacy or Pharm.D. Degree.
  • Completion of an Oncology Residency program is required or Board Certification in Oncology Pharmacy.
  • Minimum of 2-4 years' oncology experience is preferred.

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION

:
  • Current registration with North Carolina Board of Pharmacy or eligible for reciprocity.

Essential Functions

: 1. Participates in the delivery of quality patient care through the active review, assessment and approval of medication orders, including chemotherapy, in addition to advising other healthcare professionals and patients regarding the content, therapeutic action, utilization and possible adverse reactions or interactions of prescribed drugs. 2. Provides oversight to chemotherapy pharmacy satellite operations and technicians to safely prepare chemotherapy for pediatric and adult cancer patients. 3. Serves as expert, professional resource to the CCC, internal customers of organization (e.g. pharmacists, nurses, physicians) and external customers (patients & families). 4. Identifies opportunities for stewardship of high cost or high use medications to limit waste, generate revenue, and maximize value of pharmacy services. 5. Educate patients, providers, and staff members to enhance medication use and optimize patient outcomes. 6. Participates collegially with members of the department of pharmacy and other internal customers to ensure pharmacy representation in the development of medication use management programs including clinical guideline development, critical pathways, disease management, and drug use programs. 7. Appropriately documents activities, including drug therapy recommendations, interventions, educational activities, cost-savings and cost-avoidance efforts, and performance improvement initiatives in which the employee is involved. 8. Supports team leader in executing initiatives to meet the goals of the area scorecard. 9. Actively participates in the development and implementation of performance/quality improvement and patient safety activities for service area, department and medical center.

  • Ability to communicate on a professional level with physicians, nurses and other professional staff when discussing drugs and drug-related problems.
  • Possesses expert knowledge and clinical skills in cancer physiology, disease management, pharmaceutical care.
  • Ability to analyze clinical research and formulate current, evidence-based & cost-effective therapeutic plans.
  • Communicates and interacts with patients and caregivers in a positive and professional manner.
  • Provides information for patients and staff in a manner that is supportive, timely and understandable.
  • Navigates high stress and high volume situations with great precision.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office software tools such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio, and Outlook.
