Description

The Employee Health Nurse Practitioner works under the direct supervision and collaboration of the
Medical Director for Employee Health Services (EHS). Working within the scope of the nurse
practitioner license the EH Nurse Practitioner applies assessment and healthcare management skills to
meet the health care needs of the employees and volunteers of Hoag, as they relate to occupational
injury/illness management, post-offer physical assessments and other occupational health related
conditions. Functions as a clinical expert, consultant, educator and leader in the management of Hoag's
workers' compensation program including case management and alternative work programs. Works
collaboratively with the Employee Health staff in planning and implementing employee health promotion,
infection prevention and safety.
Collaborates with Department Director/Medical Director in planning, developing, implementing and
evaluating departmental goals, objectives, new programs, services and strategic plans. Plans, implements
and evaluates departmental programs for improved outcomes.

 

Essential Functions
In collaboration with supervising physician:
• Performs post-offer physical assessment, identifying the ability of the new hire to perform the
essential functions of the job based upon the job description and required physical demands.
• Performs initial assessment on employees/volunteers who have sustained a work related injury or
illness/exposure.
• Implements a treatment plan of care for injured employees/volunteers including; tests, medication, or
referral to the Emergency Department (ED), within the scope of the Nurse Practitioner license.
• Performs initial assessment of employees who request nursing services for a non-work related
medical condition. Provides first aide and/or makes appropriate recommendations for follow-up with
primary care physician or clinic/ED.
• Performs annual employee health assessments/TB screening, and takes appropriate action when
problems are identified.
• Performs initial pre-placement assessment including: TB screening urine drug screening, visual
acuity, vital signs, review of communicable disease status/titers, vaccine status, identifies potential
health problems and makes appropriate recommendation for follow up.
• Prescribes medications and therapies for work related injured employees/volunteers based on
efficacy, safety, cost and evidence-based recommendations (ACOEM guidelines or most current
California workers' compensation treating recommendations).
• Demonstrates critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skills in clinical decision making.
• Initiates appropriate and timely physician consultation when medical issue exceeds NP scope or
patient condition warrants physician intervention
• Assures completion of all required documentation both written and electronic.
• Prioritizes, coordinates and meets the needs of culturally diverse employees.
• Collaborates with Department Director and/or other nurse case managers to optimize plan of care for
the needs and treatment of the injured worker.
• Performs telephonic case management follow up on assigned cases. Keeps in contact with injured
worker, TPA, treating physician and Department Director.
• Attends educational offerings, expos, etc. to obtain knowledge of current and new standards/practices
that relate to EHS nursing.
• Collaborates with other EHS professionals to see advice/guidance when confronted with unusual or
unfamiliar conditions or issues.
• Acts as triage nurse for "walk-ins" needing Employee Health Services.
• Accurately inputs test result data into Respond software tracking system.
• Acts as back up for Department Director in their absence.
• Participates in hospital meetings including: Infection Prevention, Environment of Care and
periodic workers' compensation file review with TPA.
• Able to perform basic ergonomic workstation evaluations and make appropriate recommendations
• Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Education, Training and Experience
Required:

2 years experience as Family or Adult Nurse Practitioner. Knowledge of California
Workers' Compensation laws, current treatment guidelines, and case management. 1 year
experience as an occupational or employee health Nurse Practitioner.

Skills or Other Qualifications
Required:

Demonstrates effective communication, interpersonal skills, organizational ability, safety
measures and infection control, ability to follow instructions, maintains confidentiality.
Basic computer skills with Microsoft office.

 

Preferred:

Typing speed of 40 wpm. Able to identify human behaviors, which result in
positive health outcomes. Able to follow instructions with minimal supervision.

 

License and Certifications
Required:

 

Current California license to practice as a registered nurse and nurse practitioner.
Current BLS certification. Furnishing and DEA license.

 

Preferred:

Certification in Occupational Health Nursing (COHN-S) and/or Certification as a Nurse
Practitioner by the American Nurses Assoc. or American College of Nurse Practitioners.
