The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.


Scope of Position: 

Mechanical process engineer supporting the manufacture of mechanical components to be incorporated into opto-mechanical assemblies.

  • The focus of this role is improvement of mechanical production capabilities.
  • Manufacturing Engineers are key members of the product development teams starting with program launch to enable early involvement and concurrent engineering of manufacturing processes.
  • Process improvement is accomplished in a consistent, standardized manner utilizing a knowledge center of best practices.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Act as receiver for new manufacturing capabilities from development and division teams.
  • Maintain or help develop process flow charts, work instructions, process sheets, checklists, forms, and other required documentation.  
  • Train first round of manufacturing personnel on new capabilities.
  • Protect intellectual property by documenting key competitive processes.
  • Stay current with the latest manufacturing trends and seek out the appropriate experts when needed.
  • Assess existing manufacturing capability gaps and recommend improvement activities.
  • Equipment set up for new parts
  • Programing equipment for new parts
  • Continuous improvement through cycle time reduction, process capability improvement, and complexity reduction
  • Root cause analysis of process upsets

Travel Requirements:

  • 5%.  Typical travel includes training, networking opportunities, customer visits, and benchmarking activities as required.

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:    

  • Typical first shift production hours, M-F, 8am-5pm.  Extra and off hours may be required during times of heightened project activity in order to meet deliverables.


Required Education

  • Minimum BS in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering


Required Years and Area of Experience: 

  • 2-3 years of precision machining experience highly desired


Required Skills:

  • Desire to learn new technologies and become a subject matter expert
  • Aptitude for precision hands-on mechanical skills
  • Critical thinking to rapidly solve problems
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Desire to solve problems by leveraging Statistical/6-Sigma/DOE and Hypothesis Tree problem solving methodologies.
  • Confidence in interaction with all levels of the organization (Production techs to Sr. Leadership)
  • Ability to function on a product development team of multi-disciplinary engineers.

Desired Skills:

  • Ideal candidate would have interest and some experience in:
    • Optics and optical materials
    • Precision machining and measurement
    • Precision alignment, positioning and assembly
    • Manufacturing processing
    • CNC equipment and programming
