The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.


Scope of Position:

This is an individual position that requires strong technical curiosity across many technologies, a desire for technical leadership, and the ability to learn and share with others.   This position provides measurement and inspection automation solutions to Corning’s Precision Glass Solutions (PGS) business to deliver best in class precision glasses to our customers.  Supports drive to fundamental process understanding and lowest cost producer objectives. Supports the development and execution of plans to evaluate new technology or improvements in existing technology resulting in a superior product in terms of quality and/or cost.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Establish and maintain deep knowledge of metrology principles in glass measurement & inspection - edge profile, hermiticity, warp, thickness variations, strength, via measurements, particle characterization.
  • Establish new measurement & inspection capabilities as required; work with development to develop new gauge and migrate/transfer technologies to production.
  • Determine and maintain measurement & inspection roadmap for PGS business.
  • Provide engineering-level support to measurement and inspection equipment throughout the entire business.
  • Support NPI (new product introduction) project team to determine incoming, in process and outgoing measurement & inspection tools needed to provide data to ensure processes are in control and capable to meet customer specifications and requirement.  Individual also need to help define the calibration and maintenance requirements of the measurement & inspection tools.
  • Solve process issues through data analysis, experimentation, and collaboration with subject matter experts. Provide engineering expertise for fundamental understanding of development, engineering or manufacturing issues.
  • Lead and/or provide support for projects involving cost reduction, process optimization, and new products/processes.
  • Understand process quality architecture internal/external risks.
  • Provide trend analysis of key metrics and implement response plans.
  • Recommend/implement improvements to processes and equipment.
  • Identify chronic issues and recommend corrective actions.
  • Provide leadership or support for startup of new equipment lines.
  • Develop and update engineering and operations documentation.
  • Provide training for operations workforce regarding equipment or operations changes.
  • Design experiments and analyze data to identify and implement improvements to the metrology systems or process. 
  • Serve as project lead and/or technical team member on equipment deployment/development projects.
  • Assure quality and repeatability of processes and products.


Travel Requirements:

  • Up to 25%, depending on nature of projects


Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

  • 40+ hours/week


Required Education:

  • BS/MS/PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Optics, or Physics


Required Years and Area of Experience:

  • 10+ years’ work experience in systems development, optical test equipment and/or manufacturing
  • 3+ years of supervisory experience

  • Working knowledge of measurement & inspection equipment used to measure and inspect glass.
  • Experience with computer-based measurement or automation equipment setup and support
  • Experience with Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility (GR&R), Measurement System Analysis (MSA), and Measurement Uncertainty Analysis
  • Experience with optical manufacturing, including assembly process & device testing
  • Experience in manufacturing environment
  • Working knowledge of Matlab, Minitab, or other mathematical/statistical analysis tools
  • Six Sigma Green Belt or DMAIC project experience
