Job Summary
The Manager Pharmacy Operations will work closely with the Director of Pharmacy to coordinate and supervise designated operational functions of the pharmacy department. Included in this capacity is the oversight and supervision of the clinical pharmacist staff. The Manager Pharmacy Operations must combine administrative and clinical skills to create a well-functioning, patient-oriented department that promotes rational and safe drug therapies. This individual shall provide drug information and clinical resources to health professionals and patients within our facility. The Manager Pharmacy Operations supervises staff pharmacists, interns, and pharmacy students, and monitors all aspects of drug therapy in the facility. Regulatory issues, compliance issues, clinical metrics, tracking and trending facility data, and quality improvement will fall under the responsibilities of this position. In all aspects, The Manager Pharmacy Operations will represent the Pharmacy Department as the lead clinical authority.
Position Responsibilities: The individual in this position must lead the clinical pharmacy team by example. This individual will be held to the highest standards at all times. The Manager Pharmacy Operations will be expected to:
  • Comply with facility policy and procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform drug procurement (inventory pharmacy stock, prepare drug purchase orders, order drugs (including controlled substances) as needed, receive drugs and prepare products for final distribution, assure that drug inventories are adequate for existing need, make recommendations where warranted to help control the drug budget).
  • Process medication orders and ensure related patient charges (receive orders, labels, maintain medication profiles, reconstitute oral medications, compound parenteral admixtures, and assure the accurate and timely dispensing of medications).
  • Identify, monitor, document and oversee interventions related to medication order processing, as appropriate. These interventions include the identification of drug interactions and adverse drug reactions.
  • Assist in maintaining a closed formulary at LCMC.
  • Work with physicians on therapeutic alternatives where available.
  • Perform clinical pharmacy functions (complete interventions and pharmacokinetic assessments in a timely manner, actively participate in patient medication counseling, and the documentation of counseling).
  • Demonstrate good communications skills (provide upward/downward communication in problem prone situations; exercise judgment in determining when to involve department leadership; provide documentation of medication events via the occurrence reporting mechanism; communicate with appropriate staff with respect to scheduling/PTO etc.)
  • Demonstrate a proactive attitude, seeking to remedy situations before they arise. Report quality concerns to the Director of Pharmacy.
  • Ensure that conduct is in accordance with Corporate Ethics and Compliance policies and procedures.
  • Maintain proficiency in sterile compounding and serve as a source of knowledge for pharmacy staff.
  • Monitor drug therapy regimens for contraindications, drug-drug interactions, drug-food interactions, allergies and appropriateness of drug and dose.
  • Suggest appropriate, cost-effective therapeutic medication alternatives to medical staff.
  • Sustain the hospital formulary, minimizing non-formulary procurements, utilizing therapeutic interchanges and promoting rational drug therapy selection.
  • Provide accurate and updated medication information to healthcare staff and patients.
  • The Manger Pharmacy Operations is expected to willingly function and perform in the role of a staff clinical pharmacist when needed. This need may be short-term (pharmacist sick day or PTO) or longer term (staff shortage) until the void is filled with permanent staff.
  • Perform the duties of the Director of Pharmacy in his/her absence.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

  • Licensure/Certification/Registration: Licensure with the Florida State Board of Pharmacy. Residency training certification preferred
  • Education: Bachelor of Science, Pharmacy required; Doctor of Pharmacy degree preferred
  • Experience: 2 years inpatient hospital experience preferred.
