Overview

The Lead Technician possesses expertise and oversight for a designated technical area of pharmacy services (i.e., pharmacy automation, sterile compounding, distribution, etc.). Current designated areas include pharmacy automation, sterile compounding, and medication history. The Lead Technician performs technical, clerical, and distributive pharmacy functions under the direction of a licensed pharmacist. The Lead Technician is cross trained and able to provide expert level oversight and perform the duties of technical staff positions relevant to their designated area, which may include IV technician, evening and night shift work, and placing direct or wholesaler pharmaceutical orders. The Lead Technician will serve as liaison between support staff, professional staff (pharmacists), pharmacy management, and other departments as needed. The Lead Technician will act as a resource and a leader within the department.

Responsibilities

Patient Care* Able to perform and provides direction to staff of all Pharmacy Technician 2 and Pharmacy Technician 3 patient care essential job functions for his/her designated area of pharmacy service (see job description for Tech 2 and Tech 3 for details).

* Serves as a resource to the pharmacy team in his/her area of specialization in order to provide safe and effective patient care.
* Participates in process improvement projects in designated area aimed at providing safe and effective pharmacy services to patients.
* Performs basic calculations for compounding and order processing with accuracy.
* Provides general assistance and support to pharmacist staff.

Administrative* Serves as liaison between support staff, professional staff (pharmacists), pharmacy management, and other departments as needed.

* Work with pharmacy management to appraise daily support staff workflow and allocate resources to ensure optimal daily performance.
* Fills in for any support position in designated area, which may include patient medication history collection, sterile and non-sterile compounding, pharmaceutical purchasing, inventory control, all automated drug dispensing technologies, packaging, and compliance activities regarding all Federal, State and local laws, regulations, and standards.
* Completes target objectives in designated areas such as inventory management or automated dispensing. Examples include: inventory dollars per discharge and out of stocks, oversight of staff orientation, training, annual competency assessments under the direction of pharmacy management, return and recall management, utilization of the automated dispensing system and ongoing training.
* Assists new technicians with their orientation and training: provides oversight of the orientation, training, and applicable competency assessments of technicians practicing in their designated area of responsibility.
* Interfaces with pharmacy staff, other health professionals, and pharmaceutical vendors to complete target objectives.
* Possesses expert knowledge of pharmacy systems utilized in his/her designated area of pharmacy service.
* Takes initiative to contact appropriate vendors for support if necessary.
* Demonstrates leadership skills in ability to delegate tasks to appropriate personnel, educate staff within and outside of the department, identify and solve potential problems.
* Maintains knowledge of downtime procedures and provides leadership during downtimes.
* Implements and evaluates the use of new technologies, pharmacy services, policies, and procedures related to his/her designated area of responsibility.
* Helps ensure appropriate waste control and cost containment throughout the drug delivery system.

Compliance/Safety* Responsible for reporting any safety-related incident in a timely fashion through the Midas/RDE tool; attends all safety-related training programs; performs work in a safe manner; monitors work environment for possible safety issues and ensures others are also performing work in a safe manner.

* Stays current and complies with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies that impact the employee's area of responsibility.
* If required for the position, ensures all certifications and/or licenses are up-to-date and valid prior to expiration dates.
* Completes all company mandatory modules and required job-specific training in the specified time frame.
* Completes assigned station checks thoroughly to remove expired inventory each month as needed.
* Demonstrates working knowledge of pharmacy law pertaining to the control, monitoring, and distribution of medications including controlled substances.

Qualifications

Education

High School Diploma or GED- Required

Certificates and Licensure

Licensed with State Board of Pharmacy- Required

Certified by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board- Required

Education

Minimum 1 year experience as a Pharmacy Technician in a hospital setting- Required

Minimum of 6 months experience in designated area- PreferredHealthcare is a rapidly changing environment and technology is integrated into almost all aspects of patient care. Computers and other electronic devices are utilized across the organization and throughout each department. Colleagues must have an understanding of computers, and competence in using computers and basic software programs.
