The Surgical Operating Unit Group brings our various surgical businesses together into one cross functional, collaborative operating unit to employ the full breadth of our talent, technologies, products, services, and solutions to address the needs of customers and patients across the globe.

This role will sit at our Lafayette, CO office.
This position will lead a software development team in their day-to-day development activities, provide project planning, scheduling and tracking, and help drive functional excellence in project execution for the Surgical R&D Software organization. The candidate must be self-driven, with strong understanding of project management, the Software Development Lifecycle process and have strong technical and leadership skills.
The Software Engineering Manager is accountable for the overall health of the engineers on their scrum teams. This includes responsibility for building and maintaining a team with the right level of skills and experiences to meet the team’s business objectives. The Functional Manager is ultimately accountable for their teams’ performance and execution.
Day in the Life of a Functional Manager
Team Ownership:
- Managing and leading multiple teams of software technical leaders and software engineers, including hiring, performance management, and team development, preferably in the global distributed R&D environment settings.
- Management for Designing and developing software for complex electromechanical software systems, robotic systems, including embedded software development as well as RTOS, distributed computing, data applications, software Infrastructure, etc.
- Providing technical direction and guidance to the teams on the software architecture, design, verification and validation, ensuring alignment with product strategy and business goals; developing and maintaining long-term software technical roadmap.
- Collaborating and managing software projects in both Agile/Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) and traditional project management methodologies. Collating metrics from program executions to help the team lead towards
- Provide project team members with a clear vision and purpose for the project. Create a positive tone and morale for the team. Motivate team members and build project team identity and cohesion. Ensure cross-discipline coordination and communication.
- Own and Manage execution against an aggressive but achievable project plan, provide project-related work direction to team members, work with peer managers/cross functional program team members to monitor dependencies and ensure that critical program milestones and deliverables are met.
- Collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams, including hardware, systems, quality, regulatory, clinical and other product development teams; Communicating technical information to both technical and non-technical audience.
- Experience in medical device or regulated industry software development is preferred.
Software Functional Management
- Contribute to the advancement of the Surgical R&D software organization by driving fresh ideas for process improvement in planning, development and the overall software product development.
- Meets with direct reports and stakeholders to assess individual technical skills and level of maturity/expertise
- Assesses individual performance, potential, criticality, and retention risk; creates opportunities to engage the engineer and reduce any retention risks
- Actively works succession planning for key roles on the team
- Challenges each engineer to focus on technical leadership and growth
- Identifying and implementing process improvements to enhance efficiency and productivity while adhering to quality standards and best practices.
- Develops talent pathways both for growth within the teams as well as withing the OU and
- Participates or leads, where applicable, in Talent Workstreams within the software department
- Collaborates with the SW leads / scrum master to understand vendor performance; works directly with vendor partners to address performance issues
- Celebrates successes and wins with the software teams
Performance and Execution:
- Understands the scrum team meeting calendars and cadences; participates and provides oversight in key moments where success is critical
- Meets regularly with the Development Core Team Member (Dev CTM), Technical Core Team Member, Systems Leads, Software Leads, Product Owner (PO), and Scrum Master (SM) to understand challenges and help resolve issues
- Familiarity with major program milestones; works with each engineer to ensure that they understand the importance of delivering the program milestones, ensuring functional and administrative activities do not impact the critical milestone activities
- Creates and enforces performance objectives for each engineer to hold them accountable for work delivery by the team
- Reviews team metrics and challenges the team or escalates issues when needed
- Attends team-led Sprint planning and Sprint review meetings; monitors and holds team accountable for performance based on discussion
- Leading and tracking all software development and test metrics for Sprints, Agile Release Trains and Program Increments and enable working towards the Surgical business objectives
- Remains present during major work surges and during incidents
Operating Behaviors:
- Active member of software functional manager community, establishing processes and sharing best practices across COEs, Operating Units.
- Meets regularly with Software Dev CTM, Product Owner (PO), and Scrum Master (SM) supporting the work efforts that along with the program team
- Advocates for appropriate budgets and timelines on behalf of the team, whenever possible
- Remains familiar with related projects within the business so that future challenges can be anticipated
Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.
- Oversees activities of the company’s development and design requirements for software systems, applications and software quality assurance for enhancements and new products, including cloud-based or internet-related tools, to meet the current and future Software needs.
- Manages activities to assure programs are appropriately resourced and ensure continuous improvement in technical capability, process, and compliance.
- Manages scope, cost, and schedule within a cross-functional development team.
- Selects, develops, and evaluates personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function.
Must Have: Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering related field and minimum of 7 years of relevant experience with 5+ years of managerial experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience with 5+ years of management experience.
Specialized Knowledge or Skills:
- Prior experience leading or actively participating in software engineering delivery
- Collaboration with Software PDM (or similar), Product Owners, and Scrum Master in the past is a bonus
- Familiarity with Medtronic’s or Medical Product Development Process, specifically from a software engineering lens
- Experience in robotics software development is a plus

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$175,200.00 - $262,800.00This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).
