The global Information Technology (IT) Function is leading efforts to align IT and Business Strategy, leverage IT investments, and optimize end to end business processes and associated information integration technologies.  Through these efforts, IT helps to improve the competitive position of Corning's businesses through IT enabled processes.  IT also delivers Information Technology applications, infrastructure, and project services in a cost efficient manner to Corning worldwide.

Scope of Position: This is an exciting intern role working under the guidance of senior data analysts, data specialists and data architects in helping design, integrate and extract value from Corning’s Research, Development and Engineering (RD&E) data systems. The successful intern candidate will have a strong desire to grow into a technical subject matter expert in application development and data-related planning, storage, extraction and transformation of data in traditional and emerging systems. Responsibilities:

  • Assist in building data systems (including Big Data) that enable analytical needs.
  • Assist in development and improvement of existing software solutions that enable data exploration, analysis, visualization and modeling.
  • Work on Coding, scripting and/or web development areas under the guidance of senior technical resources.
  • Perform Unit testing, system testing and/or UAT if needed
  • Adopt and improve effective code development utilizing software lifecycle management best practices.

Education and Experience:

  • Junior year pursuing Bachelor’s in Computer Science or Software Engineering or Senior in BS in CS/SE or candidate pursuing Masters in CS/SE desired.
  • Course work completed in the following areas would be a plus:
    • Data structures and algorithms
    • Software Engineering
    • Web design/Development
    • Courses in C, C#, Python, Java
    • Introductory course in Big Data
    • Database Theory and Practice
  • GPA of 3.5 or above
  • Relevant experience a plus

Required Skills:

  • Must be a team player, resolve issues/conflicts in consultation and guidance from other senior team members
  • Must be a quick learner and rapidly come up to speed on new ideas/concepts/technologies
  • Self-motivated, curious to learn, and able to figure things out when answers are not known
  • Effective listening to develop detailed understanding of customer needs
  • Good written and verbal communication skills and ability to present information
  • Programming skills in C, C++, C#, Java, Javascript, etc.
  • Scripting skills in SQL, Python, etc.
  • Knowledge/experience in Hadoop based Big Data platforms/environments (including programming experience with Hive)
  • Ability to work with various file formats including XML, CSV, Flat files, etc.
  • Database skills/familiarity with Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, etc.
  • Knowledge of Windows Server environments
  • Familiarity and/or ability to learn Data visualization, Reporting and BI platforms like PowerBI, Tableau, Excel, etc.
  • Ability to follow a structured software development process.

Desired Skills:

  • Familiarity with NoSQL databases such as Hbase, MongoDB, Cassandra, etc.
  • Familiarity with Cloud based technologies/platforms like Azure, AWS, etc.
  • Familiarity with Enterprise Search Platforms such as SharePoint, GoldFire, etc.
  • Able to communicate to different audiences, including IT, engineering, laboratory and scientific organizations.

Hours of work: Basic work hours are 40hrs/week; 8am-5pm
