Scope of Position:

This position is for a summer internship in the Advanced Controls Innovation group. The project work involves early stage control systems research and development for new and/or mature business programs.


Job Responsibilities:

The applicant will be expected to work in a multi-disciplinary research, development, and engineering environment to identify opportunities for advanced controls.

The successful candidate will be able to use fundamental process analysis, data analysis, multivariate statistical analysis, and modeling skills to provide system understanding leading to control design. She/he may also be tasked with identifying measurements and sensor specifications required for process controls.

To achieve the same, the ability to collaborate with experts in other disciplines such as modeling and instrumentation will be required.

The candidate will design and develop innovative advanced control solutions to meet technical challenges and implement solutions for R&D and manufacturing processes. This will be done by leveraging optimization techniques to improve process performance and efficiency and utilizing advanced controls skills to implement solutions such as linear/nonlinear controls, optimal, model predictive control, intelligent control, and supervisory controls.

The candidate will generate intellectual property through appropriate technical reports, invention disclosures, and patent applications.

As part of their responsibilities the candidate may be expected to participate in process control development as part of a Smart Manufacturing initiative.



No travel is expected.


Required Education:

Ph.D. Candidate in Chemical, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering and a background in process control systems.


Required Skills:

• The candidate must have expertise in the design and development of control systems including advanced controls technologies: optimal, robust, nonlinear, etc.

• Possess system identification, data analysis, multivariate statistics, and machine learning skills leading to process understanding and control design

• Ability to work in a team or independently. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are also a must

• The candidate must be skilled in fundamental process and system understanding including knowledge of fluid dynamics as well as heat and mass transfer

• Experience implementing control systems. Experience with programming, simulation, and statistical tools such as Matlab/Simulink, Simca, C++/C#, R


Desired Skills:

• Experience with process measurements, control instrumentation, and laser systems is a plus

• First principle process modeling skills highly desired

• Strong knowledge of system dynamics theory

• Background and application using process optimization methods

• Optimistic, “can do” attitude in the face of challenges and set-backs

• Leadership of cross-functional and cross-disciplinary groups

• Experience and understanding needed to introduce advanced technology into manufacturing
