Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Role Purpose:


  • Drive improvements to extrusion processes through materials, tooling and equipment design improvements to ensure more cost effective business and standardized engineering processes.
  • Evaluate and improve the proper design, manufacture, and maintenance of extrusion process and equipment.
  • Lead/assist engineering departments in process qualifications and product validation for product and design changes.
  • Identify and pursue cost reduction opportunities through equipment, material and tooling improvements.
  • Lead/assist in developing and executing material/process improvement and cost reduction projects to improve cable making efficiency and cost.
  • Identify key initiatives for regional improvement and ascertain how support can be provided to assist regions in progressing toward achieving them.
  • Replicate, implement and standardize best-in-class processes for cable operations.
  • Assist in resolving quality issues through improvement projects as needed/requested by plant. Product Quality Architecture should be updated as necessary.
  • Facilitate and leverage available resource skill-sets from around the world, including Technology, Quality, and Division Engineering groups.
  • Ability to work across various functional groups on a daily basis to accomplish goals


Key Responsibilities:


  • Lead regional or worldwide projects in order to increase capability, achieve improved consistency, or achieve cost reduction with similar or increased product quality.
  • Assess potential design changes that impact Quality Architectures/PQA.
  • Drives early identification of material specification changes, assesses other department’s engagement requirements and ensures implementation of actions to ensure Cost Reduction improvement.
  • Interfaces with Technology Process/Equipment team, Division Engineering, and Manufacturing to understand equipment and process changes that are targeted at improving overall manufacturing capabilities.

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:  40 hours - additional hours/weekends when needed to support project work/ quality issue resolution


Travel Requirements:  Up to 25%


Required Experience:

  • B.S. of Mechanical, Chemical, Materials, or Electrical Engineering
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in extrusion processes
  • Experience leading teams in meeting continuous improvement goals, making step change process improvements.
  • Demonstrates the ability to analyze and evaluate performance from a capability, process, quality, technical, and/or cost standpoint to develop plans and strategies.
  • Communicates effectively; coordinates and aligns activities where required.


Desired Experience:

  • Exhibits sound decision making skills and exercises good judgment. Be able to effectively analyze and simplify data from multiple sources and set direction as required.
  • Demonstrates active leadership in ability to establish direction, challenging goals and clear expectations to achieve results.
