The current organizational model is based on management of multiple separate entities and projects requiring unique abilities to get things done through influence and in a network mode.

This is a unique opportunity for an experienced, proven business development professional with a passion for execution and operational management to join the core HSS team and report directly to the HSS Managing Director. This role is responsible and accountable for all aspects of managing the full-range of business development activities from deal sourcing and diligence, through syndication and negotiation, through post-close deal management. But it also goes beyond a traditional BD role to be the main “go to” person for the HSS managing Director to help get things done in all aspects of HSS from strategy building to actively leading implementation of new projects, from engaging the HSS Executive team members in new initiatives to representing the HSS Managing Director in certain forums.

Responsibilities include and are not limited to the following:

  • Sourcing, diligence, negotiating and closing of new business development opportunities with oversight of all aspects of deal process including term sheet negotiation and definitive document preparation.
  • Facilitation of company engagement with all levels and functional areas of Merck as appropriate to ensure deal management is effectively supported (i.e. finance, legal, etc.)
  • Oversight of all post-deal management and integration as needed with HSS businesses
  • Engage fully in business operations reviews for all HSS businesses to understand opportunities and risks, and provide input on strategic direction and help ensure strategies are aligned with HSS vision / mission
  • Proactively identifies and creates opportunities to drive business results
  • Support HSS Operational Management at HSS Managing Director’s request in various areas from strategy building to active lead / support implementation of new projects or engage all or some of the HSS Executive team members in new initiatives.
  • Participate in ensuring that organization follows policies, business practices, and compliance guidelines
  • Represents HSS and / or the HSS managing Director as needed at internal forum and/or external events and activities to generate/ sustain opportunities.
  • Serve as Board member at HSS entities to help ensure businesses are executing on performance objectives and strategies are aligned with HSS vision / mission.


  • Required: Bachelors’ degree
  • Preferred: MBA or equivalent relevant financial/business experience

Required Experience:

  • Minimum of (5) years experience and proven ability to independently source, negotiate, close and manage business development deals
  •  Minimum of (10) years experience in Pharma or Healthcare field with demonstrated ability to successfully execute program / project development and implementation
  • Ability to effectively influence without authority and ensure compliance with Merck’s ethics and integrity standards.
  • Strong and demonstrable history of working collegially and constructively with management teams across divisions
  • Travel 30% of the time, primarily within US. Some international travel will be required.
