Scope of Position: 

  • You will Support internal Engineering, Development, and Research projects focused on new and improved materials for Corning Inc. including raw materials, polymers, glass and ceramics.  In this role the individual will be responsible for supporting materials engineering needs on the projects currently underway in the group.  The specific project role for the summer will be tailored to match the interests of the individual students. 


Day to Day Responsibilities: 

  • Responsibilities will include investigating material properties and fit for use in Corning Inc. businesses and R&D efforts.  Activities may include: experimentation; laboratory simulations; data analysis; materials property measurements; microscope analysis – optical, topographical, SEM, etc. – all geared towards fundamental understanding of material properties and applications to Corning Inc businesses.
  • Fundamental understanding of how the process conditions and materials affects surfaces, as well as, surface interactions.
  • Develop processes that impart desired surface functionalities/attributes onto existing materials to expand their use in a wider range of applications
  • Troubleshoot and recommend solutions across stages using engineering methodologies to address surface and functional coating related challenges
  • Partner with Corning’s business to engineer and innovate process and product improvements through process excellence and material technology.  The specific assignment will depend on business needs at the time of participation.
  • The candidate will be assigned a specific project to complete that will require the application of general engineering principles. The candidate will also support the work of other teammates, complete documentation and report on findings/project status.


Required Education: 

  • We are looking for a Third or Fourth year undergraduate or graduate experience students in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or Biochemical engineering. 


 Required Skills: 

  • We require a high level of technical curiosity while enjoying problem solving and working well within teams. 
  • State-of-the art experimental/ theoretical and interpretive skills to technical problems
  • We require good technical writing and presentation skills.


Soft Skills: 

  • We are looking for a motivated Self starter
  • With the ability to work as a member of a team
  • And excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience with preparing and giving presentations would be an asset
  • You will need to be flexible and able to relate to and work with others of diverse background
