Position Summary:


The Director, Business Development –Enabling Technologies will be a key contributor to Merck’s efforts in worldwide search & evaluation, due diligence and execution of business development opportunities in enabling technology areas complementing and/or expanding Merck’s current core capabilities. Initially this individual will support Pharmaceutical Sciences and Clinical Supplies with the expectation that their responsibility will expand to other functional areas as they become proficient in the job role.

 

Primary Activities:

  • Contribute to the formulation of licensing strategy with functional area leadership.
  • Co-chair licensing committee meetings and communicate business development opportunities to internal subject matter experts.
  • Communicate and implement licensing strategy both internally and externally.
  • Work closely with functional areas, including preclinical, clinical and commercial teams, to ensure alignment between activities and needs relating to the technology opportunities that facilitate the pipeline.
  • Work closely with search and evaluation staff in the External Innovation Hubs and the Headquarters licensing team to ensure comprehensive coverage of relevant opportunity space.
  • Manage a portfolio of complex projects as the primary scientific contact and spokesperson for potential licensing, acquisition, collaborations, co-development partnerships and strategic alliances in the relevant opportunity space.
  • Be responsible for the quality of the formal due diligence output by integrating internal and external subject matter expert input for senior management review and approval.
  • Work closely with transaction leads, legal, commercial and financial analysis teams to transact and ensure that technology deals of highest priority are being advanced and executed.
  • Provide thorough and timely assessments and updates to appropriate management levels to ensure efficient communication and seamless cross functional collaboration.
  • Serve as a spokesperson for Merck and present on behalf of Merck at industry networking events, scientific conferences and other venues.
  • Proactively identify and solve complex problems that impact the direction of the business.
  • Analyze the full range of data and lead the cross-functional due diligence on licensing and business development opportunities for enabling technologies.
  • Assist in the coordination and prioritization of the portfolio of enabling technology projects and coordination of activities between the External Innovation Hubs and others in BD&L, helping to ensure the success of the overall portfolio of opportunities across the functional areas.

Qualifications

Qualifications


Education:

  • PhD in biological/medical disciplines or PharmD with 3 plus yrs. postdoctoral experience

Experience:

  • 5 plus years relevant experience in the biopharma industry with good understanding of the drug discovery and development process and broad knowledge of the biotech and healthcare sector.
  • 3 plus years of experience working in and a functional area (ex. Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, etc.).
  • 3 or more years of relevant experience in business development and an established BD network in the biopharmaceutical industry are required
  • Good understanding of industry trends and competitive landscape.
  • Strong business acumen and the ability to translate scientific and technical information to frame attractive business opportunities.
  • Strong interpersonal, analytical, critical-thinking, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Impeccable organizational skills, operational skills, and the ability to understand the content of and memorialize interactions with potential partners.
  • Strong leadership skills and a proven ability to lead without organizational authority to influence others to reach common goals.

Preferred Experience and Skills:

                      

  • 3 or more years of relevant experience in business development and an established BD network in the biopharmaceutical industry are required
