The successful candidate for the Director, US Strategy & Planning will support the GHH - US Market and the US Market Leadership Team in all aspects of commercial strategy development and execution, including:

  • Rationalizing the Global Strategy with the US Market Strategy
  • Monitoring health care market trends to inform and educate U.S. Market stakeholders
  • Ensuring strategic relevance to our top customers as their business models evolve in accordance with the external macro health care environment
  • Developing and executing strategic planning models to inform the U.S. market strategy
  • Championing the U.S. Market strategy, supporting business leaders responsible for strategy execution and collaborating to provide progress updates on KPIs  
  • Managing strategic initiatives to inform long term US commercial model transformation
  • Collaborating with GHH and Corporate strategy Leaders to ensure common understanding of U.S. Market strategy
  • Leading the evaluation of state and federal health policy reforms, assessing opportunities and threats to U.S. Market and implications to customers and strategy
  • Leading the U.S. quality strategy efforts through the integration of quality into segment and brand strategies
  • Leading U.S. Budget Planning and LROP process

The position will report to the AVP, US Market Strategy & Commercial Model Innovation and will involve regular interaction with US Market Leadership Team members, numerous other executives across Merck and external audiences.  Skill sets required to perform these responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Executive Presence:
    • Frequently deliver executive level presentations to the U.S. Market Leadership Team
    • Develop presentation content for U.S. President and Vice Presidents
    • Keeping U.S. Market Leadership informed of evolving trends and events in the macro health care environment
    • Presiding over Strategy Council to ensure that emerging trends are well assessed and vetted for potential business implications and appropriate actions are taken
    • Providing guidance and communications to U.S. Market stakeholders regarding the Annual Budget and 5 Year Planning process and ensuring the submission of well-articulated and aligned plans

  • Leadership:
    • Effectively lead in a matrix organization
    • Inspire a team of Subject Matter Experts to provide appropriate diligence to the assessment of the external environment
    • Ability to function and lead others effectively in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment, with frequently changing priorities
    • Recruit and develop key talent to keep pace with the continuously evolving health care environment
    • Engender credibility with the franchise and sales leadership teams as a trusted source for interpreting changes in the health care environment 

  • Subject Matter Expertise:
    • Comprehensive knowledge of the macro health care environment, the impact on customer business priorities and an understanding of potential future scenarios
    • Routine processes to facilitate knowledge exchange across internal Subject Matter Experts
    • Deliberate plan to engage external resources to advance knowledge and understanding of key market trends and issues
    • Functional understanding of key health policy issues and their implications to shaping the health care environment



  • Required: Bachelor's degree
  • Preferred: Advanced degree in business, health policy, health system or a related discipline 


  • Minimum of 10 years experience in pharmaceutical commercial and/or research areas
  • Strong knowledge of the evolving US healthcare environment, including political, regulatory and health care reform issues
  • Excellent influencing, organizational, communication and collaboration skills
  • Effective project management skills
  • Ability to work effectively across franchises and functions
  • Ability to learn quickly and to assess a variety of scenarios both strategically and operationally
  • Exceptional business acumen and analytical skills
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven team building skills
  • Budget management
