Merck is currently seeking an exceptional chemist to lead the Discovery Chemistry Modalities team located at our Boston, MA site. The successful candidate will be responsible for multidisciplinary project leadership, strategy and execution as well as performance management and personal development of a team of 5-7 scientific team members with peptide and small molecule skillsets. In this role, the incumbent will oversee a portfolio of projects, provide strategic guidance through direct reports and be responsible for rigorous scientific quality and pipeline progress. In addition, he/she will join the Modalities Chemistry Leadership Team  and participate in activities such as strategic direction, recruiting and resource-management. Furthermore, the candidate will leverage a close relationship with the Boston Discovery Chemistry team, participate in cross-functional teams across the wider discovery organization and may be responsible for communication with governance and external collaborations. The incumbent will also help identify and validate new targets through chemistry and review opportunities for collaboration, licensing and acquisition in support of the pipeline. To accomplish the above, the successful candidate must have excellent interpersonal, cross functional collaboration and communication skills.



  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, biochemistry, or related field.


  • 5+ years of industry experience in drug discovery.   
  • Experience training and  mentoring team members in drug discovery. 
  • Experience with project leadership. 
  • Experience in small molecule or peptide synthetic methodology, total synthesis or chemical biology. 


  • Track record of training and mentoring team members in synthesis and drug discovery  for small molecule or peptide programs
  • Experience in drug discovery project leadership and strategic-thinking
  • A proven track record of solving complex problems.   
  • Experience in the design and characterization of small molecules, peptides, or biologics 
  • Expert communication, collaboration and leadership skills in a team environment
