Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group):

Development scientist within the Specialty Material Development organization with key responsibility supporting Product Development activities in the Product Performance and Reliability group. Will interact across several organizations including research, development, product engineering and commercial to lead product development reliability efforts independently and as part of teams.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with research, development and commercial teams to define and implement mechanical reliability testing in support of new glass development for Gorilla® Glass business as well as other glass projects.

• Work with Product Development team to define customer requirements and relevant testing to measure requirements.

• Conduct product testing against defined customer specifications and assess ability to meet them.

• Troubleshoot root cause(s) for discrepancies in supplied parts or yields to identify appropriate corrective actions to solve.

• Identify, evaluate, and implement potential improvements to product performance.

• Conduct competitive testing on possible alternative products and highlight key product attribute differences between Corning’s solution and the competitive offerings

• Works with Research team and other internal resources to implement new characterization techniques based on customer requirements, improvement in product performance, and/or ensure part quality of customer samples

• Develop and Lead Qualification for new products - used as basis for reliability, product specifications and value proposition.

• Compile, analyze and present results and recommendations to key project leadership and maintain documentation.

• Identify intellectual property opportunities and file invention disclosures and patent applications


Travel Requirements (please note if international): • <10% - may include international

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: • Typically 40hrs, some evening conference calls, Flex-time


Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration)

• Minimum MS, PhD preferred, in Glass/ceramics, mechanical engineering or materials science

• 2 years technical experience in Product and Process Development


Required Skills (These are skills that candidates MUST possess)

• Experience with mechanical testing and fracture mechanics of brittle materials (e.g. glass, ceramics, etc.).

• Familiar w/ Reliability Engineering and program planning, analysis

• Expertise with statistical software (ie: minitab, JMP)

• Experience in Product/Process development

• Data analysis skills; can analyze, interpret, and draw conclusions based on results

• Understanding of fractography and optical microscopy techniques to conduct analysis

• Understands different modes of loading and is familiar with various testing techniques.

• Ability to identify appropriate tests based on product specifications or problem to be solved

• Leadership skills - Well organized, plans work effectively, multi-tasks

• Clearly communicates to stakeholders and other organizations

• Works independently, decisive, defines and proposes course of action


Desired Skills (These are skills that would be nice for candidates to possess)

• Results oriented, can get work completed in a timely fashion driving results through other internal organizations

• Experience with semiconductor wafers

• ASQ-CRE certification, Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt.


Soft Skills (Communication/Team/Leadership)

• Demonstrate ability to work in team environment as well as independently with minimal guidance

• Self-motivated, “can do” attitude

• Excellent verbal and presentation skills, summarizing data to key outcomes
