Scope of Position Broaden and extend Corning Inc.’s competency in the field of screen printing and thin film coating development in the Automotive interior and glazing Business. This will require an individual to manage, develop, promote and implement screen printing and thin film coating knowledge from laboratory to manufacturing. To guide the fundamental understanding efforts of new processes and new material interactions to minimize and control surface related defects while achieving low cost and high reliable products. Utilize project management skills to develop and to guide the engineering first principles and practices within Corning facilities.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities • Interface and work with the Research, Development and Manufacturing teams that are involved in the innovation and manufacture of new products, materials or processes for Corning’s Automotive Business • Focus will be on managing individuals to build fundamentals on surface coatings and next generation material behaviors and processes for low cost and high quality products. • Work with other project team members on solving difficult coating related problems, understanding program related issues and general process engineering / process understanding. • Manage internal lab activities and equipment to develop proof of concept and materials. • Interface with outside suppliers on development efforts or testing proof of concepts of materials, fixture and machine components. • Interface with internal R&D and manufacturing customers to get their understanding of coating materials and processes. • Individual must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. • Individual must investigate prior art and document any Intellectual Property developed as part of their project activities • Manage the document project results through internal reporting means • Individual must present the project(s) they are involved in with for review by peers, customers and managers. • Work as a team member/advisor during the development of new coating materials and with system integrators. • Report on project activities on a pre-determined basis. Ensure results meet the customer’s requirements and standards. • Maintain records and track expenditures against allocated funds. Estimate time required to accomplish tasks and monitor performance against schedules. • Individual must be capable of executing project assignments with minimal supervision. • Individual will be expected to work in a High Performance Work Team environment. • Project travel is expected and will depend upon the project portfolio Role within group • Individual will be responsible for managing members on cross-functional project teams, on early innovation stage projects, through concept generation/certification, technology development, detail design/build, and start-up in pilot or high volume manufacturing . • Strong level of technical curiosity that will enable unique solutions to the technical challenges. • High level of fundamental understanding of the process and materials to enable the development of cost effective products and finishing machine systems. • Ability to work in a team based environment and participate on a highly matrixed project team • Understand how to integrate commercially available technologies and processes to enable Corning, Inc. to develop robust next generation process equipment solutions. • Able to effectively leverage external machine builders and system integrators for detail design, build, and integration of later stages of machine system implementation. • Understand and practice the use of semiconductor automation procedures and techniques • Be responsible for the functional and operational integrity of design, estimating costs, defining project scope, budget and schedule. • Be responsible for identification of project resources necessary to complete the project tasks and coordinate the project team’s efforts towards successfully achieving overall project objectives. • Procure, implement and document systems and assist in training operational personnel.

 

Education and Experience • B.S./M.S./PhD in Technical Discipline • Minimum 5 years in a technical field to include o Process, Equipment or Product Development or Engineering o Technology or Product Transfer (preferred) o 5-10 yrs. of screen printing (preferred)

Lead by example, set expectations and motivate team members to achieve and exceed goals. Travel Requirements • Estimate travel up to 40% depending upon specific project assignment. Travel may be required during installation, debug, and start-up as well as for routine interaction with Customers and Suppliers. This would be a combination of domestic and international travel. International travel would most commonly be to Asia or Europe.
