RESPONSIBILITIES

I. JOB SUMMARY/RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Coordinates all aspects of The Queen's Medical Center's (QMC) drug diversion prevention program and provides oversight of controlled substance monitoring and surveillance activity as it relates to concerning or suspicious practices potentially resulting in the diversion of these substances from the organization and or patients.

• Responsible for regulatory, legal, and licensing body reporting requirements related to the mishandling and diversion of controlled substances by employees. Follows guidelines recommended by professional organizations guiding drug diversion prevention strategies, including providing recurrent education to employees as applicable.

II. TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Essential: standing, sitting, walking, seeing, hearing, speaking.

• Frequent: reaching below shoulder level.

• Occasional: stooping/bending, kneeling, climbing stairs, walking on uneven ground, squatting, twisting body, finger dexterity, lifting usual weight of 5 pounds up to 25 pounds, pushing/pulling usual weight of 10 pounds up to 50 pounds of force, carrying usual weight of 5 pounds up to 20 pounds, reaching above and at shoulder level, repetitive arm/hand motions, frequent gripping of an object.

• Operates pharmaceutical and office equipment such as computer, telephone, calculators, IV infusion pumps, automated dispensing cabinets, and other pharmacy related technologic equipment.

III. TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Not substantially subjected to adverse environmental conditions.

• Exposure to hazardous drugs, antibiotics, chemicals, dust, odors and cleaning/ disinfectant fumes.

IV. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A. EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE:

• Current Hawaii State license as a Pharmacist.

• Doctor of Pharmacy degree.

B. EXPERIENCE:

• Three (3) years experience as a hospital pharmacist.

• Prior supervisory/leadership experience preferred.

• Experience to demonstrate the following:

o Knowledge of medication management systems and technologies (automated dispensing cabinets, etc.), pharmacy operations (i.e. ordering, receiving, storage, distribution, administration, returns, wasting), and hospital operations (i.e. perioperative, anesthesia, procedural areas, clinics, etc.).

o Knowledge of federal, state, and local drug abuse and diversion trends.

o Knowledge of medication use and safety regulatory standards (Joint Commission, CMS, Hawaii Board of Pharmacy, OSHA, USP, DEA, NED).

o Excellent organizational and time management skills.

o Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with all levels in an organization.

o Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and electronic health record systems.

• Familiarity with the causes, symptoms, recognition, and treatment of drug addiction and human behavioral assessment preferred.

• Prior experience implementing new software preferred.
