The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.


Scope of Position:

This is a senior controls engineering position within the CSM Advanced Optics Division Engineering group.  Controls engineering responsibilities include establishing project scope requirements, concept development followed by system design, vendor selection, fabrication and test, installation, and startup for complete integrated controls systems for development and manufacturing applications. Solutions must meet customer technical requirements, and requirements for cost and schedule.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Work on individual projects or participate on project teams.
  • Define scopes for projects, write AR justification, and manage cost and schedule for projects.
  • Design and develop complete controls systems for process equipment, facility, and measurement systems.
  • Interface with vendors and plant Trades groups.
  • Software development.
  • Complete documentation, drawings, and training as required.
  • Supervise installation and startup of controls and related equipment / systems at vendors and within the manufacturing facilities.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and restore existing equipment and controls.


Travel Requirements: 30% domestic travel is required. Some international travel may be required depending on project assignment.



Required Education: BSEE or higher

Required Years and Area of Experience: >10 years of experience in an industrial facility


Required Skills:

  • Excellent leadership and project management skills
  • Excellent problem solving skills and solid hands on approach
  • Hands on experience with computers, motion control systems, PLC programming, and data acquisition.
  • Understanding of classical control theory
  • Thorough knowledge of AC and DC circuits.
  • Working knowledge of National Electric Code, NFPA 79, NFPA 70E, including overload protection, fault current analysis and arc flash analysis.


Desired Skills:

  • Experience developing SCADA and HMI’s
  • Programming skill (specifically Emerson Delta V)
  • Strong use of rational process for problem solving, such as KT.
  • Experience with NC / CNC is a plus.
