Description
Welcome to the Post Pollution Future with LanzaTech

A post-pollution world is inevitable, and people will either be part of it, or the planet will go on without us. At LanzaTech, our technology platform is transforming waste carbon into everyday products, to meet the needs of this moment. Our science is state-of-the-art, but the idea is simple. We use nature to heal nature. We capture carbon emissions which are then fed into bioreactors where trillions of carbon-hungry microbes go to work. These tiny dynamos consume the waste gases and produce valuable raw material commodities. Pure enough to be resold, repurposed, and recycled again - from sustainable jet fuel to beverage bottles, to yoga pants.

Founded in New Zealand, we are a global women-led company with an international footprint and a diverse employee population. Diversity, Equity & Inclusion are a key part of our mission and core values which we show through our hiring, our leadership, our efforts to educate internally and willingness to learn.

In addition, we have announced our plan to merge with AMCI Acquisition Corp. II and expect to become a publicly traded company on Nasdaq. Come join the team as we strive to make a Post Pollution Future!

The leading gas fermenting company in the biofuel and biochemical field, Lanzatech operates reactors at all scales, from the laboratory to commercial plants, including the largest dedicated gas fermentation R&D facility in the world. Computational Biology supports fermentation and strain development work across the organization, applying metabolic modeling, metagenomics, variant analysis, omics (proteomics and transcriptomics), and other approaches for continuous improvement of our biocatalyst and gas fermentation process.

As a senior research scientist within Computational Biology, you will play a critical role in supporting LanzaTech's business objectives. Your work will focus on the following areas:

* Working with experimental scientists to efficiently evaluate genetic improvement strategies and validate microbial strain genotypes
* Close collaboration with cross-department technical teams for project planning and execution, including US government grant applications
* Developing and maintaining variant calling and data upload pipelines based upon business needs
* Analyzing adaptive evolution at from laboratory to commercial scales to identify targets for genetic improvement, stabilization
* Participating in active research and commercial projects to deliver computational biology analysis in support of project goals
* Designing and executing computational research studies from initial concept to final reporting to address these technical risks
* Mentoring research associates and technicians

Required qualifications:

* PhD degree in bioinformatics, computational or quantitative biology, chemical engineering, microbiology, microbial ecology, or another related major.
* Demonstrated record of research excellence in experimental or computational biology (publications, patents or deployed code), especially in evolutionary engineering, adaptive evolution, or microbial ecology fields
* Deep understanding of bacterial physiology and genetics
* Experience with variant calling or microbial resequencing projects, including tools such as Breseq, GATK, and other variant callers
* Experience with at least one programming language, such as but not limited to Python, Java, C#, Matlab, R, or C++.
* Experience with statistical analysis of high dimensional datasets

Desirable qualifications:

* >3 years' experience working in an industrial biotechnology or other similar R&D environment, including being a PI in academia
* Experience designing and performing wet-lab work, especially performing adaptive laboratory evolution or metabolic engineering
* Experience with Python 3
* Prior work with workflow management tools such as Airflow or Luigi
* Prior work developing containerized reproducible computational workflows
* Experience with microbial genomic annotation tools (RAST, PGAP, et)
* Familiarity with Linux operating system

This position will be in-office at our Skokie facility.
