The nurse utilizes the nursing processes based on research and evidence based outcomes to meet patient care needs. Participates in maintaining a safe patient care environment.  Demonstrates leadership skills by directing personnel and establishing collegial relationships with others. Provides quality nursing care to all patients in accordance with the California Nurse Practice Act, and professional regulatory standards. Projects an image of professionalism in communication, appearance and conduct.  Supports the mission of the Patient Care Services Division.  Participates in the continuous quality improvement process.  Maintains a working knowledge of departmental and hospital standards, policies and procedures.

The patient population served is the infant to the geriatric patient population and includes a broad scope of emergency nursing diagnoses. The primary responsibility of the nursing staff is to provide direct patient care and to collaborate with other disciplines of the health care team to ensure the delivery of safe, timely and appropriate quality patient care. In addition, the registered nurse may care for patients requiring the following interventions: Cardiac and ST Segment monitoring, Cardioversion, Defibrillation, Central Venous Catheter, chest Drainage, Critical Medications, ACLS, PALS, Intravenous Therapy, Restraint Management, Assaultive Behavior, Ventilator Management, Conscious Sedation, 12-Lead ECG, Ketamine, Transcutaneous Pacer, Transvenous Pacer Insertion, Phlebotomy, Rapid Sequence Intubation, Accucheck, NIH Stroke Scale, and Tracheostomy Care. Patients care may also include other medical, psychiatric, and surgical diagnosis.

Education, Training and Experience

Required:  Must start a Bachelor’s of Nursing (BSN) program within one year of the hired date unless the BSN degree has already been obtained upon hire. In addition, must attain the BSN degree within 2 years of starting the BSN program. Successful completion of an EKG course or equivalency required.

Preferred:  Emergency nursing experience preferred. BSN degree.


Skills or Other Qualifications

Required:  Demonstrates effective communication, interpersonal skills, organizational ability, knowledge of proper body mechanics, safety measures and infection control, ability to follow instructions, knowledge of age of population served, and additional skills and knowledge of equipment may be required for hire into some patient care departments.

License and Certifications

Required:  Current licensure, or interim permit as a Registered Nurse in the State of California required.  Current BLS certification is required prior to clinical rotation.  ACLS is obtained and maintained.

Preferred:  Basic arrhythmia, ACLS and PALS
