Full-Time Days Job Description:

Under the general supervision of the Director-MLS Program, Laboratory Team Leader, or Division Manager, performs a variety of technical and general duties at an advanced practitioner level. Teaches theory and clinical practice to medical laboratory science students. May function in one or more laboratory division, working independently with minimal supervision. Counsels, evaluates students as necessary. May perform charge duties.

Duties and Responsibilities:

+ Performs routine and/or specialized testing and procedures with supervision as appropriate.

+ Performs a variety of duties at progressively greater skill levels under varying degrees of supervision; records results. May operate a variety of laboratory instruments.

+ Performs quality control and instrument check procedures and maintains related records.

+ Oversees the work of MLS students and other personnel as assigned through training, allocating and monitoring work.

+ Performs surveys and does comparative analyses of work units; may participate in research activities and investigates new products, equipment, methodologies and introduces, demonstrates, and recommends as is appropriate.

+ May inoculate, cultivate, classify and identify microorganisms found in bodily fluids, exudates, skin scrapings, autopsy and surgical specimens in order to provide data on cause, treatment and prevention of infectious diseases.

+ May group or type blood of donors and recipients. May determine compatibility of donor blood products with intended recipient.

+ May perform chemical and/or immunological test to identify and/or quantitate substances found in blood and other body fluids.

+ May perform counts, describe morphology of and perform specialized studies on blood and other body fluid cells. May perform coagulation testing.

+ Devises clinical check lists for MLS students rotating through their area of responsibility. Plans and follows clinical checklists for rotations through other WellSpan Laboratories in instructor's area of expertise.

+ While working in the laboratory, when a student is present in his/her particular department, supervises clinical instruction while completing regular duties as listed above. May assign students to various staff when not in the lab during clinical rotation.

+ Works with Director to set up scheduling of clinical rotations, and follows through with students to assign them to appropriate areas dependent on student progress.

+ Observes and evaluates students' performance in actual clinical situations, assists, guides and instructs as necessary.

+ Lectures and gives classroom demonstrations on subjects and illustrates using microscopes, test kits, AV and other equipment.

+ Teaches courses in own area(s) of specialization; lectures and conducts student laboratory sessions.

+ Prepares assignments and examinations to determine student progress and grades.

+ Meets individually with students on a quarterly basis, completing evaluations of didactic and clinical progress.

+ Counsels students as needed and is available to conduct reviews after hours when necessary.

+ Maintains all required student records and prepares related reports.

+ Regularly reviews Journals, scientific articles, appropriate textbooks to keep abreast of changing technologies and incorporates pertinent changes into lecture material.

+ Orders reagents and supplies as needed for student laboratory sessions.

+ Provides educational experiences for shadowing guests, nurses, medical residents and other providers as needed.

+ May consult with medical staff and other health care providers on matters relating to laboratory services.

+ Performs other MLS responsibilities as identified (updated list available in Allied Health/MLS department).

+ Other lab related duties as identified.

Qualifications:

+ Minimum Experience:

+ 2 - 3 years

+ Minimum Education:

+ Bachelor's Degree

+ Preferred Experience:

+ 5 years

+ Required Certification:

+ Experienced ASCP Certified generalist or specialist (e.g., MLS(ASCP), MT(ASCP), SH(ASCP), etc.)

+ Physical Demands:

+ Lift / carry supplies / equipment (up to 50 lbs.)

+ Frequent prolonged standing/walking

+ Manual dexterity and mobility (reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching)

+ Skills:

+ Good verbal and written communications skills; computer literacy
