Bayer Animal Health - Director of CMC, Formulations, and Analytical Development 




The primary responsibilities of this role, Bayer Animal Health - Director of CMC, Formulations, and Analytical Development, are to: 


  • To be the expert and main contact for all technical development issues within the U.S. Research & Development group and supervise the management of the Research &Development Technical Transfer group, Research &Development Formulation Development group, and the Research & Development  Analytical Development group;
  • To coordinate all technical (Chemistry Manufacturing Controls) development activities in the US-project teams with the Animal Health development groups of Bayer AG in Germany to ensure that all studies are planned and executed in full compliance with applicable U.S. regulations of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and/or the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) or other US-government regulations;
  • To function as liaison between development groups of Animal Health in Germany and the U.S. to provide direction, and expertise in technical discussions, the establishment of development strategies, the creation of written policies and procedures that govern Bayer Animal Health's development processes, and the planning of technical activities to ensure the availability of all technical documents at the time of submission for product approval;
  • Contract development and scouting are becoming increasingly important in order to supplement Bayer Animal Health's internal Research & Development efforts. Director of Technical Development is responsible for the outsourcing of all technical development studies in the U.S. Effective monitoring of external studies and resolution of technical problems are essential to keep these activities on track with internal project development goals and timelines;
  • To cooperate closely with business development and the intellectual property/patent functions of Animal Health in the U.S. and Germany. Provide technical expertise in the assessment of technical development capabilities of potential candidates for cooperation and in the review and assessment of technical contents of patents. This expertise is critical in the decision process for potential external cooperation;
  • To provide technical and regulatory advice and support to other departments in the Animal Health business groups. Examples are:
    • to Supply Chain Management in Germany in the selection of drug substances and other critical raw material suppliers
    • to Quality Assurance in data and document review
    • to project development teams in discussions and decisions of technical matters
    • to Regulatory Affairs in discussions with regulatory agencies
    • to (Pre-)Clinical Development in clinical sample manufacturing supply;
  • To represent Bayer Animal Health in industry associations and is actively involved in influencing new regulations that affect the Animal Health industry in a way that is acceptable and favorable for Bayer Animal Health;
  • To provide information necessary for the business group management to allow adequate planning of personnel and financial resources;
  • To foster and encourage teamwork attitude with good working relationships to other groups in the U.S and between the Animal Health development groups of Bayer Corp. and Bayer AG;
  • To manage employees by providing clear objectives, timely performance feedback, and opportunities for training and advancement;

Required Qualifications:


  • PhD in chemistry or pharmaceutical sciences or a closely related science paired with a minimum of ten (10) years working experience in a technical development and regulatory function is needed. Additional practical experience may compensate for a lesser scientific degree;
  • Significant management experience preferably in an internationally oriented environment of at least five years is desirable;
  • International working experience is essential in order to facilitate communication and timely problem solving of complex technical issues with Animal Health development groups in Germany and other regions;
  • The incumbent must have the ability to communicate effectively at all levels with individuals and teams from different cultural backgrounds and experiences;
  • The incumbent must have a thorough knowledge of regulations and guidelines that govern the technical drug development processes in the U.S. and Europe;
  • Sound decision-making capabilities with limited information are required since it is often not possible to access all relevant information.
