Under the general supervision of the Global Competitive Intelligence Oncology Head, incumbent is responsible for providing strategic Oncology leadership in business and competitive intelligence rooted in deep understanding of the external healthcare environment and Merck’s internal business. Insights and recommendations provided to key stakeholders will support strategy development and critical decisions affecting Merck Oncology business. The incumbent partners with key Oncology stakeholders to benchmark competitor performance, business models and capabilities, analyze current and future market developments, and to develop insights that will help enhance global and regional strategy and decision-making through improved visibility into how well our choices fit in the context of the marketplace. Proactively facilitates the identification and prioritization of intelligence efforts critical to strategic planning and execution for key stakeholders in Merck Oncology, and provides direction for the design and refinement of intelligence plans. The incumbent performs these functions independently and at a high level of achievement.

Primary activities include, but are not limited to: 
  • Ensure effective utilization of business and competitive intelligence across relevant Divisions and Functions, to provide unbiased and fact based competitive insights, benchmarking, and recommendations regarding Commercialization strategies, Portfolio Prioritization and Sourcing, Oncology Development and Research Strategies, and Business Development initiatives. 
  • Lead team analysis and/or independently perform strategic assessments of select competitor activities, including (but not limited to): market situation analysis, strategic forecasting, strategic and operational benchmarking and articulation of implications to Merck Oncology. Lead communication efforts of findings and make recommendations to key stakeholder groups. 
  • Globally monitor and benchmark strategic plans and key developments of Merck competitors to provide early warning for potential threats and opportunities for successful implementation to prioritized strategic initiatives and tactical plans of Merck Oncology. 
  • Provide guidance and lead efforts for the creation of effective intelligence programs (including annual budget planning etc.) in support of key stakeholders in Merck Oncology strategy development, business development and prioritized commercial teams. 
  • Maintain comprehensive and current understanding of relevant Oncology healthcare environment issues including policy, regulatory, health technology to identify key issues relevant to strategic planning initiatives at the global level. 
  • Demonstrate leadership in developing and connecting a global network of subject matter experts across Merck Oncology to share intelligence and to support strategic activities of key stakeholders (e.g. for surveillance, competitive planning etc.) 
  • Support the design and execution of Competitive planning initiatives (competitive simulations) for key Oncology products subject to significant competitive events. 
  • Ensure the effective implementation and integrity of all CI and BI activities such as primary research, and other intelligence gathering and analysis projects through timely and appropriate coordination with stakeholders, and external vendors. 
  • Rigorously apply the Merck standard of ethics and policy for intelligence gathering. 
  • Proactively communicate and facilitate discussions with all key stakeholders and technical personnel to ensure that these ethical and legal standards are well integrated into all CI/BI activities in Merck Oncology 
  • Work closely with colleagues across all GCI functions to provide maximum benefit to our customers 
Qualifications

Education Minimum Requirement:
  • B.A. or B.S.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant business-related experience in pharmaceutical, biotech, or healthcare industry with broad-based exposure to Oncology development & commercialization. 
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills 
  • Project management skills 
  • Proven record in the use of both scientific and business intelligence to address key intelligence questions. 

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Advanced scientific of medical degree (Pharm. D., PhD., M.D) or advanced business degree (MBA) and more than 10 years in Oncology related marketing, marketing or strategy support, or oncology development preferred
  • Extensive CI network and practical knowledge and experience in the application of competitive intelligence. 
  • Demonstrated leadership and abilities to influence key decision makers to adopt his/her recommendations.
