Reporting to the Regional Leader, Director, Asset & Reliability Management (ARM-COE), the Regional Engineer, will oversee activities related to asset management and equipment reliability in support of primarily External Manufacturing Operations; however may also be called on to support internal Merck/MSD Sites within a specified region within MMD.  The Regional Engineer will be responsible for working with the Merck External Manufacturing site teams (there is a team supporting each external manufacturing site) and the external manufacturing sites for the purpose of improving the site’s asset performance.  

The regional engineer’s involvement will typically be in one of three forms:
  • Proactive Initiatives:  Working with the Merck Focus Factory Teams and the sites to institute measures to improve and/or maintain strong asset reliability.
  • Reactive Response:  Working with the Merck Focus Factory Teams and the sites to respond to asset related issues, which are or could be impacting production.  
  • Training/Awareness:  Working with the Merck Focus Factory Teams (and potentially the external sites) to develop an awareness of asset management and equipment reliability to be able to triage reliability issues with the goal of understanding how best to resolve them.
The Regional Engineer will leverage the existing tools available through the ARM-COE (and elsewhere) in order to execute activities in a lean, but structured manner.   These tools include: reliability processes (e.g. Voice of Customer process), reliability training modules, ARM-COE expertise, internal site expertise and contractor support.  

The Regional Engineer must be thoroughly familiar with the challenges the sites are facing, the objectives of MMD and the individual Business Units and be able to work with Merck Focus Factory and site personnel to enable the site to achieve World Class Supply.  The Regional Engineer maintains the highest possible quality standards in the design, construction, installation, maintenance and operations of assigned activities.  
The Regional Engineer must also demonstrate an ability to work well with leaders internally and externally as he/she:
  • Supports sites in providing Reliability Engineering and Maintenance System Support 
  • Works closely with all levels of site personnel to ensure support is provided in a reliable, cost effective manner
  • Trains and develops internal and external staff to achieve overall results to meet stated MMD, Business Unit and Site’s stated goals.
  • Maintains strong leadership skills to manage hybrid teams and to plan, prioritize, and implement processes in cross-functional environments
  • Possesses strong interpersonal skills with the ability to influence leadership, peers, and customers.  
  • Able and willing to take a hands-on approach
  • Works closely with the  Merck Focus Factory Teams  to understand external manufacturing site needs and to prioritize these needs in partnership with External Manufacturing using the asset management and reliability prioritization processes. 
  • Deploys asset management and equipment reliability methodologies to ensure a best in class approach is embedded in the sites.   
  • Applies “data mining” techniques for analysis of engineering test data, historical data, and field data to predict operational reliability while optimizing equipment up time and equipment life cycle costs. 
  • Establishes, prioritizes and directs reliability improvement teams; recommends improvement strategies for maintenance, operations, engineering and purchasing to extend lifecycle and equipment usage plus support cost reduction efforts.  
  • Supports capital cost reduction by finding alternate and low investment engineering and manufacturing processes. 
  • Creates a positive work environment for maximizing business impact or reliability engineering and mechanical integrity programs. 

Extent of Travel: 50%

  • Bachelor of Science Degree or higher in Engineering 
  • A minimum of five (5) years of engineering process and reliability experience, 
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in sterile or pharmaceutical manufacturing, clean room environment
  • Strong leadership and influence skills to select/develop/manage internal/external staff/team to plan, prioritize and implement processes in cross functional environments. 
  • Strong working knowledge of reliability prediction and improvement methods and tools.
  • Strong working knowledge of cGMP, Sterile Manufacturing, Formulation & Filling, and packaging.
  • Proven record for tracking and predicting reliability and implementing improvement strategies across a network of manufacturing sites. 
  • Strong business, analytical, information system and computer skills. 
  • Experience with engineering processes, engineering software, reliability testing and prediction is essential. 
  • Experience in Lean Six Sigma methodologies, value stream mapping and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis
  • Business performance measures critical to Functional/Quality/Cost issues.
  • Fluent in a second language (Spanish, Dutch, Chinese, Japanese, etc.) 
  • Certification in Asset Management and/or Reliability e.g. CRE/CMRP highly desirable 
  • Knowledge of cGMP and GDP preferred
  • Report, standards, policy writing skills requiredProficiency in Microsoft Office and job related computer applications required
  • Lean Six Sigma & MPS Methodology experience desiredSAP knowledge and experience preferred
  • SAP Knowledge and experience preferred
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interface effectively with all levels of colleagues including; site leadership, managers and technicians in a team environment
