The Associate Director – Program Management, Global Sourcing & Procurement, Global Pharmaceutical Operations (GPO) will lead the overall infrastructure to coordinate existing and new business transformation projects, bringing the discipline, execution and implementation skills required to manage the large number of initiatives being managed by the Direct Materials Leadership Team (DMLT) and will closely coordinate with the Indirect Sourcing & Operations Leadership Team (IS&O LT) to progress endorsed initiatives. This requires driving alignment and support required to advance endorsed category strategies, priorities, and initiatives. As a member of the POP-LT (Pharma Ops Procurement - Leadership Team), the Associate Director, PMO-POP will work closely with the global team members across the Global Sourcing & Procurement teams, colleagues within the GSMG Process, Operations & Strategy (PO&S), Supplier Development & Performance Management (SD&PM) and Global Workplace & Enterprise Services (GWES) to ensure the initiatives are managed effectively and reported to appropriate senior-level stakeholders and business unit partners.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the gathering, creation, delivery, tracking, analysis, modeling and management of information regarding the Pharma Ops Procurement’s progress advancing Direct Materials and Indirects procurement organizational objectives, providing leadership and direction to accelerate organizational performance through effective project management and communications, strategy development, and focused team performance.

This important role will be a member of the Pharmaceutical Ops Procurement Leadership Team and will work extensively with Global Sourcing & Procurement colleagues globally on strategic priorities.

Essential Job Responsibilities –

  • Coordinates, prioritizes and reports progression of strategic and business initiatives across the Pharma Ops Procurement organization, in support of organizational priorities aligned to Merck’s business strategy and objectives.
  • Serves as a member of the Pharma Ops Procurement Leadership Team and provides leadership for GSMG/Procurement (Direct & Indirect) initiatives and activities in support of organization operations, enhancements, and day-to-day requirements.
  • Oversees the management and coordination of all leadership team meetings; ensuring optimization of meetings and topics are aligned to critical priorities and delivering on defined objectives.
  • Actively engages with POP-LT to maintain continual focus on achievement of organization’s mission and vision.
  • Closely partners with stakeholders, Global Sourcing & Procurement, SD&PM, Global Pharmaceutical Operations, ExM Operations, and other business functions to prioritize strategic initiatives and closely tracks/reports progress achieved.
  • Ensures the Pharm Ops Procurement Lead is adequately prepared for all internal and external meetings, working with the relevant subject matter experts as needed.
  • Coordinates with POP-LT members, DMLT and IS&O PMOs, Business Stakeholders and Finance on profit plan development and management, and assists with quarterly forecasts and long range planning.
  • Manages interdependencies across Direct Materials and IS&O portfolio of initiatives, to ensure conflicts and integration points are adequately considered and addressed.

Leadership - As a key POP-LT member, accountable for development and implementation of a robust process which establishes the prioritization, tracking and reporting of all initiatives supported and progressed by the Pharma Ops Procurement organization.


Organizational Development - Partners with stakeholders within and outside of GP to ensure alignment.

Continuous Improvement – Drive team operational performance, taking part in both objective setting and monitoring performance relative to established KPI’s. Drive improvements in both sourcing & operation effectiveness and efficiency, eliminating non-value work as needed.

Stakeholder Management - Work in a way that positively engages the support of business colleagues using problem solving, transparency, and proactive communication skills. Build sourcing management pipeline, ensuring stakeholder alignment and compliance to supply management processes.

Diversity - Actively support diversity, both within Merck as well as expanding relationships and spend with Diverse Suppliers.

Business requirements/cost management focus - Must have keen insight and understanding of business requirements on a 1/3/5 year horizon, and partners GP and business peers to drive cost reductions. Support implementation of Supplier Relationship Management with the key suppliers to foster innovation, manage supplier performance, establish appropriate governance model, and ensure continuous improvement.

Opportunity Assessment – maintain disciplined approach to identifying, tracking and reporting of future savings opportunities in support of the Profit Planning Cycle (annual budget process).

  • Bachelor’s degree in a Business, Engineering, Science, Supply Chain or Procurement related area
  • Minimum of 5 years in Chief of Staff and/or PMO role with demonstrated successful implementation experience .
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working with senior/executive leaders.
  • Experience in large-scale organizational change initiatives.
  • Experience in strategy development, strategic planning and strategy implementation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.


  • Pharmaceutical industry experience
  • Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certified
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in Supplier Management and/or Operational Management.
  • MBA or advanced degree is preferred
  • Knowledge of performance management & reporting and operations management best practices
  • Understanding of the category management process
  • Advanced and skillful understanding of applications with focus on data analysis tools (MS Office Suite)
  • Process Improvement and project management experience. Working knowledge of other project management processes (e.g. risk, issue and assumptions management, change control and project reporting).
