As a team member of the US Strategic Alliance Center of Excellence, the primary responsibility of the Associate Director, Strategic Alliances for Health Care Transformation, will be to drive operational alignment, formulate project / alliance plans and consult with the Strategic Alliance Leaders & Strategic Alliance Directors to manage all phases of the strategic alliances. (e.g., Assess, plan and apply project management, knowledge management and alliance management expertise to advance the work in a compliant manner) The responsibilities include working across Strategic Alliance Partners and functional areas within Merck to understand and progress the work currently underway and support the alliance management of new efforts. Position will leverage customer experience, alliance management and account management skills to support meeting co-determined objectives and maximizing the value of strategic alliances. Position is responsible for adding value to the overall alliance efforts by coordinating with other Strategic Account Leaders & Strategic Account Directors, legal, compliance, strategy and commercial colleagues and looking holistically at the engagements to ensure strategic alignment to Merck’s business objectives. Position will work with colleagues within Merck and directly with Top Customers and Alliance Partners to develop alliance management plans. Position will develop and manage operational approaches and project plans for the strategic alliance.

This key position is primarily an internal role, but will also interface with Prioritized Customers and other strategic alliance partners. (e.g., Technology Disruptors) This role will report into the US Strategic Alliance Center of Excellence Leader. The Associate Director, Strategic Alliances for Health Care Transformation will be responsible for the following:

  • Apply expertise in Alliance Management, Project Management and understand Merck’s Capabilities/Solutions to serve as an alliance management consultant for Strategic Alliance Leaders & Strategic Alliance Directors.
  • Apply proactive project management expertise to establish project plans including, realization measures, critical path, dependencies, milestones and risk mitigation suggestions to own and pull through issue resolution effectively
  • Effectively provide thought leadership to inform and shape strategic alliances
  • Develop effective relationships with Strategic Alliance partners responsible for alliance management
  • Actively Facilitates Discussions/Interactions with alliance partners
  • Work with Strategic Alliance Leaders & Strategic Alliance Directors to establish a differentiated strategic business partnership with the Prioritized Customers and Alliance Partners. 
  • Work with colleagues within Merck, and Alliance partners to develop comprehensive alliance management plans (e.g., Alignment to customer segment strategy, franchise strategy, alliance fit/feasibility assessment, gap analysis and alliance deliverables) 
  • Collaborate within Merck commercial business to advance strategic alliances through various stages, including the management of medical and legal reviews of concepts, completion of FMVs (Fair Market Value Assessments), MSAs (Master Service Agreements), and other processes, other required contracts, ensuring that all practices align to corporate compliance requirements. Work with Legal, Compliance, Privacy, Business Development, CMIO, Finance and other areas as needed
  • Ensure / accountable for compliance of the prioritized customer agreements by having a holistic and in-depth understanding of the commercial and regulatory requirements for collaborations. (e.g., MCA, MSA, Consortiums, QISAs)
  • Facilitate the appropriate exchange of alliance information internally, with third party vendors and with customers
  • Apply knowledge of Health Information Technology to strategic alliances where appropriate
  • Develop alliance and solution plan scenarios and metrics for assessing success of initiatives as appropriate.
  • Support the development of executive-level presentations that provide alliance status updates, and reflect progress against the alliance objectives



  • Required: BA/BS
  • Preferred: MBA, MPH, MS, Finance


  • 5+ years of experience working in alliance management or project management with key alliance partners or customers 
  • 5+ years of experience working in the US Healthcare environment with experience understanding issues that affect healthcare stakeholders
  • Experience developing and implementing longitudinal project plans
  • Ability to develop effective relationships with key internal and external stakeholders involved in strategic alliances or healthcare related collaboration  (Actively facilitates discussions / interactions with alliance partners) 
  • Understanding of business development processes, decision-making and related financial analysis
  • Foundational knowledge of the medical, legal, and compliance considerations involved in alliances or collaborations
  • 10% Travel

  • Strategic Alliance expertise
  • Health Information Technology or Digital Health experience
