The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.


Purpose of Position

This position is responsible for applications support, sales engineering and returns management for the Precision & Laser Optics product lines. 


Major Responsibilities (Ongoing Tasks)

  • Managing technical issue resolution with customers, including technical inquiries and quality complaints; expected to coordinate closely with Quality, other plant functions, and the Account Manager(s)
  • Managing commercial aspects of the product repair process, including quotations, forecasting, status tracking, and metric reporting
  • Developing relationships within customer’s engineering, development, and operations organizations to advance Corning’s position for new & continued business
  • Leading projects related to customer attribute improvement requests, customer data sharing requests, customer revision alignment, and customer requests for proof of conformance to specification/process capability
  • Centralizing product and process capabilities for material, finished optics, and assemblies, including information on published product information sheets; expected to contribute presentation information to the “sell decks” as capabilities and customer interests evolve
  • Organizing responses to new product inquiries from customers, including coordinating capability, cost, and capacity inputs from plant engineering, division engineering, and development.  This includes supporting plant engineering in translating customer specifications into internal specifications and process control limits
  • Assisting with understanding and communicating internally-driven or supplier-driven process changes to customers, including presentation of supporting data
  • Participating in:
    • Technical road mapping, including attribute improvement and product expansion in line with customer roadmaps
    • Customer meetings including quality audits
    • Annual Product Line Plan activities as required
    • Intellectual Property discussions as it pertains to competitive intelligence and road mapping
  • Travel expectations: 10-20% approximate annual travel requirements including international travel




Required:            Bachelor’s degree in engineering discipline

Preferred:           Masters degree or higher in physics, optics, materials science, engineering



  • Multi-disciplinary experience including at least two of the following (operations, engineering, development, commercial, applications engineering & support, program management or project management with customer facing activities)
  • 0-2+ years in customer facing roll
