The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.

 

Purpose of Position:

Corning produces high-end laser based metrology instruments for the measurement of flat surfaces under the Tropel Metrology Instruments brand.  The Applications Engineer is responsible for becoming the Subject Matter Expert for all or some of our product line.  In this role they will support the sales team, and our production team to develop custom and semi-custom solutions to address our customer’s measurement needs. This process entails evaluating the samples, selecting the correct instrument and instrument configuration, measuring or arranging the measurements and writing a results report demonstrating the instrument capability. Resources will be available from the engineering, service and manufacturing groups to support the applications team. The position often involves working directly with our customers or sales engineers to demonstrate instrument capability.  In addition, the Applications Engineer supports installation and training at customer facilities for highly customized systems. 

 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate applications and sample measurement program to support sales efforts
  • International travel to visit with potential customers and demonstrate our technical capabilities
  • High level applications support for more complicated instrument installations
  • Responsible for the timely generation and accurate completion of measurement reports
  • System level engineering and test for the product line
  • Manage weekly meeting to organize resources to support testing efforts
  • Maintain demo room instruments in support of above while also keeping the area neat and presentable
  • Recommend and justify adequate amounts of demo gear and accessories
  • Manage applications database
  • Technical sales and service support
  • Support of new product development efforts both for specifications, and for system testing
  • International travel to support customized tool installations
  • Some market research to identify new opportunities for targeted product development

 

Travel Requirements: Up to 25%

 

Required Education and Years of Experience:

  • BS in Engineering field
  • 4-10 years experience
  • Independent and self-motivated, but able to work on a team in a matrix style structure
  • Customer interaction experience and strong interpersonal communications skills

 

Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge of precision measurement
  • Knowledge precision surface generation techniques
  • Experience with Gage R&R methodology a plus
  • Experience with optical systems a plus
  • Software programming experience a plus
