For the people and the future!” The Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine invites applications for a full-time, 12-month faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology. The College is seeking to identify and hire an energetic, dedicated team member with training in histology and/or developmental biology, strong pedagogical versatility, a passion for teaching and mentoring and a deep commitment to medical education. The Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology is one of three basic science departments in the College and is responsible for developing and delivering anatomical curricular content in gross anatomy, histology, cell biology, embryology, and neuroanatomy in the osteopathic medical curriculum. The primary responsibilities of this position are development, delivery, and assessment of histological content as part of the first and second year systems courses with additional opportunities for teaching in our cadaver and imaging-based anatomical laboratories as well as cell biology, embryology and neuroanatomy, dependent upon interest and experience. The chosen candidate will function as a member of a departmental team committed to developing collaboratively designed, and highly integrated curricular elements that focus primarily on years 1 and 2. This position reports directly to the Chair of the Dept. of Anatomy and Cell Biology. Compensation includes a competitive salary and benefits package, commensurate with appointed faculty rank, qualifications, and experience. Position Requirements Minimum Qualifications: Earned terminal degree (PhD, DO, MD, DSc), or degree in hand by start date, in one of the anatomical sciences or closely related field. Experience teaching in a medical school setting. Expertise in histology. Record of, or, demonstrated potential for growth in teaching, scholarly activity and service. Enthusiasm for instructing, mentoring, and engaging with medical students in a collaborative educational setting. Preferred Qualifications: Two or more years of experience teaching histology to medical students. Post-doctoral experience with evidence of productive scholarship or research in the candidate’s preferred area of expertise. Familiarity with teaching histology using traditional as well as virtual methods. Experience or interest in developing and using innovative teaching methods (for example: team-based learning, ‘flipped classroom’, problem-based learning, distance learning, interactive large group presentation, audience response systems, etc.). Experience teaching in cell biology, embryology, gross anatomy or neuroanatomy. Familiarity in teaching anatomy with various medical imaging modalities (e.g.: CT, MRI, ultrasound). Familiarity with learning management systems for curriculum delivery (e.g. Canvas, Blackboard, etc.). Familiarity with exam item writing, USMLE and/or COMLEX-style. Experience with medical curricular and instructional design. Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Position: Instruct first and second-year osteopathic medical students. Develop board-style (COMLEX/USMLE) exam questions. Participate in student mentoring and advising. Contribute to curricular development, implementation and assessment. Provide service to the institution, community and profession. Engage in scholarly activities. Perform other duties as assigned. Specific Faculty Responsibilities: Devote majority of effort (approximately 60-70%) to delivering instruction in the first and second year osteopathic medical curriculum. Serve on departmental and institutional committees and participate in other groups in performing institutional and community service. Consistently demonstrate and model professionalism as defined by the Burrell College declaration of faculty professionalism and responsibility. Work collaboratively with other faculty members to develop the integrated and interdisciplinary medical curriculum. Supervise, advise, mentor and evaluate osteopathic medical students through the curriculum. Develop, prepare, deliver and evaluate educational materials. Participate in scientific, educational, community-based, or other types of research and/or scholarship. This position is available to begin July 2022, but the start date is negotiable. The position is a fully funded appointment reporting directly to the Chair of the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology.
