Scope of Position:

Department focus is the development of robust, first / next generation machine systems that provide significant competitive advantage to Corning’s businesses, and / or enable new products and product lines.

The individual will have the opportunity to be a member of cross-functional project sub-teams, working on early innovation stage projects aligned with department goals. This normally includes some portion of concept generation, technology development, detail design / build, and start-up in manufacturing.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

The specific assignment will depend on business needs at the time of participation. Normally, assignments involve participation on project sub-teams supporting the development of new products or process machine development programs for applications ranging from prototype technology demonstrators to first / next generation manufacturing systems for any of Corning’s Divisions including Science and Technology (R&D), Display Technologies, Environmental Technologies, Specialty Materials and Life Sciences.

Depending on candidate interest and experience, the assignment may focus on the detailed design and analysis of products or machines to support the project. This could involve the use of CAD tools (SolidWorks) for generating concepts and shop drawings, defining appropriate materials of construction, specification of geometry and dimensional tolerances, working with machine shops to fabricate prototypes, or making rapid prototypes, and doing mechanical or thermal calculations using simulation tools such as finite element analysis.

The project or assignment could involve using standard commercial equipment or developing new machines / mechanisms or combination of both, or product design.

Work with other project team members solving difficult problems, developing fundamental understanding, and general process engineering and process understanding that could require measurement, data acquisition and analysis.

Utilize internal lab facilities and equipment to develop proof of concept prototypes.

Report on progress to overall project team and management.

 

Required Education:

Enrolled in Mechanical Engineering program

 

Desired Education:

Completed at least two years of a Mechanical Engineering curriculum.

 

Required Skills:

High level of technical interest.

Ability to learn, develop and advance technical skills in design and system integration.

Ability to use experimentation to develop basic process knowledge, design prototype test systems, and perform proof of principle testing to validate design approach.

Ability to work in a team-based environment and contribute to a highly matrixed project team.

Sound problem solving and decision making processes and skills.

Results-oriented with a high commitment level.

 

Desired Skills:

Creative thought High commitment level Experienced with SolidWorks or equivalent 3D design software.

Experience with use of standard computer modeling and analysis software packages used in design of mechanical systems.
