What Does Your Boss Say About You?
Description
Basic Qualification
• Undergraduate degree
• Internal communications experience
• Experience in science, health or health technology or related industry
Details
• The global oncology business was created in 2010. The formation of the new business requires a full time internal communications director senior level support to lead business communications within the unit itself (800 people) and also to all the GSK Local Operating Companies about business and R&D strategies and plans to ensure effective implementation.
• The role will directly report to the Head of Oncology Communications.
• This role will take the oncology business plan and strategy and lead the leadership communications activities to align employees in the central oncology business, commercial Regions and the Local Operating Companies (LOCs) in Europe, US and Emerging Markets, Asia Pacific, Japan, to ensure the plans are understood and implemented.
• The role will also form a vital link between the LOCs and the centre to assist with planning and communicating the management priorities to the business. The role will proactively seek out the needs of the LOCs and feed them back into the global business.
• The role advises on effective communications strategies and employee engagement activities, based on the oncology business plans, R&D strategy, external environment and commercial environment.
• They will also bring insight from the global internal communications team to Oncology and ensure that global initiatives are embedded and brought to life in the oncology business. This will ensure alignment and increased efficiencies in key matters.
• The role will also be accountable for communications around organisational changes within the global business as well as communication about changes in other parts of the business that may impact the oncology Global Business e.g. Scientific Engagement, Sunshine Act and other strategic initiatives.
• The role will be responsible for bringing external perspectives into the business to help employees understand the external environment, and GSK Oncology’s need to adapt to serve the environment. This will be achieved by implementation of the ‘External Insight’ and ‘Focus on the Patient’ programmes in Oncology. There will be a particular emphasis on reimbursement and the payer environment and building trust through working to GSK’s values in everything we do.
• This role uses knowledge of the oncology business, the internal and external environment and the skills of a professional communicator to ensure that GSK Oncology’s internal communications activity supports the business objectives and at the same time engages employees in a meaningful way.
• The role must also use knowledge of the wider GSK organisation to ensure that communications within the unit are coherent and consistent with the rest of the GSK enterprise (in R&D and commercial for example). This involves managing multiple stakeholders, integrating information from different lines in the business (as well as the LOCs) and finally prioritising them to create a coherent plan.
• Knowledge of change management will be extremely important as the global oncology business is relatively new and the culture is still forming, with a new business plan recently communicated. Knowledge of these techniques will be important to align and engage the workforce during the changes, and as the business evolves.
• The role will also require editorial skills when writing for senior leaders but also to manage the editorial content of the intranet web site.
• The role involves high-profile issues management. Therefore anticipation and proactive preparation for communication issues, triggers and opportunities is fundamental to the role (especially in employee relations matters). The individual must have excellent understanding of news management, good judgment, financial literacy and the ability to counsel and manage multiple senior internal stakeholders.
• This person must be robust, have an ability to filter out ‘noise’ and focus only the most critical activities and occasionally say ‘no’ to requests (politely) despite encouragement to engage in anything and everything by multiple stakeholders.
• Influencing and negotiating skills are vital. This person will have to have credibility, have demonstrated effectiveness at leadership without authority and stakeholder management / influencing skills with credibility up to influence decision-making at a strategic level.
