Title: Scientist I/Senior Scientist
Location: MD, Gaithersburg - Corporate Headquarters
Req: 01939
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will apply expertise in cancer stem cell biology and tumor self-renewal pathways to lead a team in developing novel biologics therapies for cancer. We are seeking candidates with a Ph.D. in cancer biology and experience in the identification and validation of targets involved in cancer stem cell growth and survival. The incumbent also will lead the advancement of targets into full drug discovery programs, hence industrial experience is preferred. Additional responsibilities include providing cancer stem cell expertise to help guide ongoing cancer drug discovery projects, building new cancer stem cell research capabilities, and establishing and managing collaborations with leading academic and biotechnology groups in this field. The incumbent will also communicate results to colleagues including senior management, and influence oncology research strategy. The individual must have a strong record of achievement in the cancer stem cell field and proven leadership and teamwork skills. A passion for science, a strong vision for cancer biology, excellent oral and written communication skills, and the desire to publish data in peer reviewed journals and to present at scientific conferences are essential.

Position Requirements
Special Skills/Abilities:
• Detailed knowledge of and extensive experience with cancer stem cell biology
• Experience with in vitro and in vivo cancer biology assays and models
• Extensive experience in target discovery and validation
• Ability to handle human cancer samples and tissues to isolate cancer stem cells and establish model systems for research
• Ability to lead teams and manage direct reports effectively
• Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
• Aptitude for innovation and creativity, and ability to work with minimal supervision
• High degree of common sense and strong organizational skills
• Strong interpersonal skills to work in a team-oriented environment
Educational Requirements
Education: Ph.D. in a field related to cancer biology
Experience: 5-7 years in either an academic or industrial research setting. Previous industry experience and previous management experience is preferred but not essential.
