Description
Title: Associate Scientist I/II Location: Gaithersburg, MD Req #: 1668 Major Duties and Responsibilities: Develop and optimize bioreactor control, operation, and scale-up strategies in 50 and 100 L CIP/SIP stainless steel bioreactors. Carry out experimental designs, execute and interpret data. Troubleshoot cell culture and bioreactor operation to ensure a consistent high yield of product. Lead harvest technology (mainly continuous centrifuge) and associated filtration train development, harvest technology transfer to DSC(development scale-up center) and manufacturing operations. Assist in the maintenance of cell culture equipment. Additional activities will include new technology evaluation, media filter sizing studies. Participate in department and project team meetings and provide presentation updates of development work as well as author written reports and summaries.

Requirements

Position Requirements
Experience: 5 – 8 years for the Associate Scientist 1 position with a Bachelor’s degree, and 2 – 5 years for the Associate Scientist 1 position with a Master’s degree is required. Greater than 8 years for the Associate Scientist 2 position with a Bachelor’s degree, and greater than 5 years of experience with a Master’s degree. Special Skills/Abilities: Candidates with the following experience / skills are preferred: Aseptic technique, mammalian cell culture, CIP/SIP bioreactor operation, harvest unit operation development. Excellent teamwork and communication skills are required. Knowledge of statistical design of experiments and analysis of data is a plus. Ability to work with word processing and spreadsheet programs is expected. Job Complexity: Must be able to operate several bioreactors simultaneously, as well as seed train and other operations. Cell culture activities require periodic weekend work. Candidates must be flexible in time management.
Educational Requirements
Candidate should have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in chemical engineering or a related field.
