Title: Associate Scientist II/ Scientist I Location: MD, Gaithersburg - Corporate Headquarters Req: 02265 Position Summary: Major Duties and Responsibilities (including supervising others): Design and execute experiments for purification process development including optimization, scale-up and technology transfer. Develop methods for process and product characterization of proteins and impurities. Troubleshoot and provide technical services for clinical manufacturing processes. Assist in the execution of viral clearance validation studies. Review and analyze data independently. In collaboration with more senior staff, assist in determining the strategy for future direction of research. Assist in oversight and training of junior group members. Present data at group meetings, project team meetings and in one-on-one situations. Be able to provide precise documentation for regulatory discussion documents and submissions. Assist in other activities as required. Maintain accurate records of all experimental planning, results, and analysis. Possess excellent writing skills for authoring technical reports, study protocols, and process development reports. Work effectively with other Development groups (e.g. analytical, cell culture, clinical manufacturing), to manage and facilitate purification process development and optimization.

Requirements

Position Requirements
Special Skills/Abilities: Knowledge of protein chromatography, filtration (normal and tangential flow), protein characterization, purification process development optimization goals, and analytical methods development is required. Excellent writing and communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to thrive in an interdisciplinary team environment are required. Experience in statistical design of experiments is desired. Experience in biochemical and biophysical characterization, automated robotic technology (e.g. TECAN systems), viral clearance, formulation for protein stabilization, and large-scale protein purification (e.g. from 20+ liter cell culture) will be possessed by stand-out candidates, but is not absolutely required. Job Complexity: Complex position involving hands-on technical work for protein purification development and some analytical method development. Position requires a thorough understanding of scientific method, protein biochemistry and chromatography principles and methods. Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills are also required. Candidates will be expected to manage multiple projects simultaneously, appropriately prioritize their work, and work with often-changing timelines. Supervision: Expected to work independently with limited supervision. Will be provided with broad general goals and will be expected to plan, propose, execute, analyze, and report results and conclusions of experiments and other projects to supervisor. (Supervision required, level of independence).
Educational Requirements
Requirements/Qualifications: Education: B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in chemical/biochemical engineering, biochemistry, or related field. Experience: The position requires with 8 to 13 years of relevant experience for candidates with B.S. degree, 5 to 10 years of relevant experience M.S degrees, and 0 to 3 years of experience for candidates with a Ph.D. degree.
