Description Senior Manager, Public Relations RSV Franchise

Position Summary: This position is aligned with the commercial RSV franchise, and facilitates the achievement of core objectives by providing strategic, cross-functional public relations counsel and support.
This position requires a broad understanding of the current and projected business goals for the RSV franchise and the corporation as a whole. The broad responsibilities for this role require a skill set and previous experience at managing multiple projects at once; proven success at prioritization of projects and deadline-driven demands; ability to thrive in a matrixed organization; expert news judgment with a refined sense for triaging media inquiries and preparing executives for media interviews.
Additionally, the candidate will develop and deftly implement integrated public relations activities in support of the company¡¦s RSV franchise of marketed and development-stage products. Also, the candidate must form strategic partnerships with Marketing, Medical Affairs, Clinical Development, Product Development, Policy, Regulatory and Government Affairs internal teams to drive achievement of strategic vision, operating objectives and key operational performance metrics. The ideal individual will have demonstrated project management skills that produce positive results both on time and on budget.
This position will require direct interaction with senior executives to offer strategic counsel and preparation for media activities, public meetings and milestone events. Additionally, candidate must be able to confidently and independently interface with media contacts at government agencies and advocacy groups. The individual will represent Public Affairs on the RSV brand team, and will also serve as a highly-visible (internally and externally) member of the launch team for MedImmune¡¦s next-generation RSV immuno-prophylaxis product, motavizumab, as well as a participate in planning activities with the RSV product development team (PDT).
The candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with ID teams within Research, Clinical Development, Medical Affairs and Government Affairs to identify communications opportunities and to distribute information that supports the company¡¦s goals of educating targeted audiences on RSV disease, clinical trial results, product safety and efficacy benefits, and any other information of interest. Experience working through formal legal and regulatory approval processes for communications materials is a plus. Candidate shall be responsible for developing and maintaining talking points/Q&As on relevant topics and establish framework for external messaging among cross-functional groups. Position Requirements The candidate will also be responsible for helping to drive the overall corporate PR function by ensuring the brand team activities and general corporate awareness activities and messages are aligned, mutually supportive and designed to help achieve the company¡¦s strategic long-term objectives. This position will provide strategic vision and insights to improve department processes and drive value for internal stakeholders. Ideal candidates must also appreciate the importance of performing well in a team-oriented environment and be willing to take on additional responsibilities beyond those outlined in this job description.
Key Responsibilities:
o Develops and implements all public relations activities in support of the company¡¦s RSV franchise of marketed and development-stage products, including identifying and securing the appropriate level of project management resources from PR agency in support of associated PR strategic and tactical plans
o Identifies proactive communications opportunities around topics and information of interest, creating strategic plans to effectively disseminate the information to targeted audiences
o Establishes strategic partnerships with RSV franchise brand teams and provides strategic communications counsel in the development of PR activities that enable achievement of objectives
o Prepares internal and external spokespeople, including executives, for media interactions
o Drives media relations for the company¡¦s RSV disease awareness programs, including serving as company spokesperson, fostering story development and shaping media responses/key messaging/issues management materials
o Builds meaningful alliances with media relations professionals at relevant third-party organizations
o Understands and exposes threats to achieving communications results and develops strategies to mitigate
o Drafts and secures approval for scientific and product-related press releases
o Develops communication activities in conjunction with 3rd-parties such as with advocacy organizations, lead investigators, academic institutions, business partners and professional agencies
o Will work closely with the various Government Affairs Managers (GAMs) and state advocacy groups to develop both reactive and proactive media plans regarding Medicaid and payer issues at the state level on an ad hoc basis
o Assist the Director of Infectious Disease PR with the development and execution of an external response plan to third-party prescribing guidelines that will be issued in 2010, pending FDA approval for motavizumab
o Manages day-to-day oversight of external agencies including work stream and project execution as well as budgetary responsibility within established corporate parameters
o Develops and maintains reporting metrics that assess PR activities and their ability to lead to positive results Educational Requirements Requirements:
o Bachelor¡¦s degree (or equivalent) in PR, communications, journalism or English with previous scientific/technical writing experience -or- Bachelor¡¦s degree in science with Master¡¦s degree in communications-related field
o A minimum of 8-10 years previous pharmaceutical or biotechnology product PR support (combination of corporate/agency work a plus) with demonstrated results
o Strong media relations skills and relationships coupled with proactive issues management experience
o It would be preferred that the candidate have knowledge and understanding in a combination of the following areas: the pediatric space, RSV, medical body recommendations; fee-for-service Medicaid and Managed Medicaid as well as commercial payer issues; pharmaceutical and/or biotechnology industries; R&D; and/or pertinent scientific topics (e.g., antibody development)
o Experience developing and maintaining relationships with professional and patient associations
o It¡¦s preferred that the candidate also have experience managing perception issues related to the price of ¡§orphan-drugs¡¨ or complex biologics
o Excellent technical writing skills ¡V Proven ability to translate technical concepts into easily understood and persuasive terms
o Strong presentation skills ƒ{ Prepare corporate spokespersons for media and external speaking opportunities and, at times, serve as company spokesperson
